Rare schelvis/Freak haddock

In de nacht van donderdag naar vrijdag zijn we naar 56.46N-1.30W gestoomd. Op vrijdag 12 juli varen we vanaf die positie naar het westen. Het idee is dat we aan het einde van dit transect vlakbij de haven van Leith zijn. We zien gedurende de dag heel weinig echo's. Om 12:36 verschijnen er zeer compacte scholen, stijf aan de grond waarop we het net uitzetten voor trek 18.
In the night from Thursday to Friday we steamed to 56.46N-1.30W. On Friday 12 July we sail from this position to the west. The idea is that we will be close to the port of Leith when we arrive at the end of the transect. During the day we see hardly any echo's . At 12:36 very dense schools appear which are very close at the bottom. Wet shoot the net for haul 18.

De vangst bestaat uit bijna 400 kg kever. Doordat de vis zo klein is, ontsnappen ze door de grote mazen in het voornet. Als dat niet zou gebeuren, was de vangst nog veel groter geweest.
The catch consists of almost 400 kg of Norway pout. Because the fish is so small, they escape through the large meshes in the front net. If that would not happen, the catch would have been much bigger.

De vangst van trek 18 bestaat uit jonge kever - The catch of haul 18 consists of young Norway pout.

De vangst wordt uitgezocht, want er zit ondere andere ook sprot, grauwe poon, wijting en schelvis doorheen - The catch is sorted out, because it also consists sprat, grey gurnard, whiting, haddock and some small blue whiting.

Enkele kevers in de vangst zijn wat groter. Een kever (boven) lijkt op het eerste gezicht op een kleine wijting (onder), maar als je naar de kop kijk, zie je het verschil. Bij wijting rijkt de bovenkaak duidelijk over de onderkaak. Bij kever is dat niet het geval, de bek is duideljjk naar boven gericht en het oog is groter dan dat van wijting. En - in tegenstelling tot wijting - heeft kever een miniscuul baarddraadje (zichtbaar op de foto bij het 33.5mm streepje). - A few Norway pout in the catch are somewhat larger. At first sight a beetle (above) looks like a small whiting (below), but if you look at the head, you see the difference. In whiting, the upper jaw clearly reaches over the lower jaw. This is not the case with Norway pout, the beak is clearly directed upwards and the eye is larger than that of whiting. And - in contrast to whiting - beetle has a tiny barb (visible on the photo at the 33.5mm line).

Een rare schelvis in de vangst: het dier is erg gedrongen, heeft een grote kop en de bekende "Petrusgreep" vlek is bij dit exemplaar opvallend scherp getekend. - A freak haddock in the catch: the animal is very stocky, has a large head and the well-known haddock-spot is marked sharply in this specimen.

We hebben weer stijf aan de grond gevist: in de vangst zitten vijf platvissen. De soort is schar (Limanda limanda) - We fished very close to the bottom again: there are five flatfish in the catch. The species is dab (Limanda limanda).

Doordat we geen aantekeningen meer zien en dus niet hoeven te vissen komen we 'savonds om 21:38 UTC all aan op het einde van het transect op 56.14N-2.25W, waar we stoppen voor de nacht. De volgende ochtend zetten we koers naar Leith. Op zaterdag 13 juli om 9:00 UTC komt de loods aan boord die ons naar de haven gaat leiden.
Because we no longer see any fish recordings and therefore do not have to fish, we arrive at 21:38 UTC at the end of the transect at 56.14N-2.25W which is earlier then expected. Here we stop for the night. The next morning we set sail for Leith. On Saturday 13 July at 9:00 AM UTC the pilot will come on board to lead us to the port.
