We are approaching the end of this survey. On Wednesday 17 July 2019 we start at 55.10N-1.16W in an easterly direction. At 6:14 UTC we see two schools on which we fish for haul 21. The catch consists of - not entirely unexpected - sprat.
The net is behind the ship during hauling of haul 21. |
Trek 21, 17 juli 2019, 55.10N-0.25W, 560kg sprot (10% makreel) - Haul 21, 17 July 2019, 55.10N-0.25W, 560kg sprat (10% mackerel). |
There are also four very small whiting in the catch. They are only 4-6 cm and are easily lost among the larger fish. Moreover, many will have escaped through the large meshes. In reality, a lot more will have swum. We think there is a connection with the large amount of lion's mane - (90) and blue (4) jellyfish in the catch. Young whiting seek protection between the tentacles of the jellyfish, just like clownfish. So they are actually small Nemos. This is not the first time we see this connection between young whiting and jellyfish during this survey.
Because we have too little time to finish all transects and, moreover, the last two transects are very difficult due to the height differences - which means that fishing is impossible in many places - and because of wind farms we are adjusting the last three transects from 55.10N-1.33E (17 July 2019,16.13 UTC) to 54.22N-0.16W from where we will set course to 54.02N-1.59E, the position where we will close the survey.
