De eerste trekken - The first hauls

Op maandagmiddag 1 juli 2019 om 12:30 UTC verlaat de Tridens de haven van Aberdeen voor de Nederlandse deelname aan de akoestische survey voor haring en sprot. De groep onderzoekers bestaat uit reisleider Serdar Sakinan, Dirk Burggraaf, Hendrik-Jan Westerink, André Dijkman-Dulkes en Bram Couperus. We hebben ook een gast aan boord: schipper Patrick Raats van de hektrawler SCH302 "Willem van der Zwan".  Patrick vaart mee als waarnemer namens rederij W. van der Zwan en Zonen.

Om 17:27 UTC starten we op 57.44N-2.11W voor een transect in noordwestelijke richting in de Moray Firth. Alsof de duvel ermee speelt: na een paar mijl wordt er olie-lekkage geconstateerd in de de bakboord hoofdmotor: die kunnen we dus nu niet meer gebruiken. De transecten worden weliswaar gevaren op een hoofdmotor, maar voor de het vissen worden normaal gesproken beide motoren gebruikt. Dit betekent dat we vanaf nu alleen onder gunstige weersomstandigheden en boven een vlakke bodem kunnen vissen. Dit probleem lijkt op het motorprobleem drie maanden geleden tijdens de blauwe wijting survey, maar nu is het de andere motor.

Tegen de schemering zien we talrijke schooltjes loskomen van de grond. We zetten uit voor trek 1 om 20:10 UTC. De vangst bestaat uit een mand kleine kevers (Trisopterus esmarkii). Er zitten ook wat sprotjes en jonge haring tussen: net genoeg voor een leeftijds- en rijpheidsmonster.

On Monday afternoon, 1 July 2019 at 12:30 UTC, the Tridens leaves the port of Aberdeen for the Dutch participation in the acoustic survey for herring and sprat. The group of researchers consists of tour leader Serdar Sakinan, Dirk Burggraaf, Hendrik-Jan Westerink, André Dijkman-Dulkes and Bram Couperus. We also have a guest on board: skipper Patrick Raats of the SCH302 "Willem van der Zwan" trawler. Patrick sails as an observer on behalf of pelagic fishing company W. van der Zwan en Zonen.

At 17:27 UTC we start at 57.44N-2.11W for a transect in a north-westerly direction in the Moray Firth. After a few miles, oil leakage is detected in the portside main engine: so we can no longer use it. Although the transects are sailed on one main engine, both engines are normally used for fishing. This means that from now on we can only fish under favourable weather conditions and above a flat bottom. This problem resembles the engine problem three months ago during the blue whiting survey, but now it is the other engine.

At dusk we see numerous schools coming loose from the ground. We set the net for haul 1 at 20:10 UTC. The catch consists of a basket of small Norway pout (Trisopterus esmarkii). There are also some sprats and young herring in between: just enough for an age and maturity sample.

Trek 1, 1 juli 2019, 58.03N-02.34W, ca. 30kg.kever (en enkele jonge haringen en sprotjes) - Haul 1, 1 July 2019, 58.03N-02.34W, appr. 30kg Norway Pout (and a few young herrings and sprats). 

De vangst van trek 1 bestaat uit jonge kever (Trisopterus esmarkii). Hoewel we veel scholen in het netten hebben zien gaan met de trawlsonar, valt de vangst tegen: 30kg. De meeste visjes zijn door de grote mazen in het voornet ontsnapt. - The catch of haul 1 consists of young Norway pout (Trisopterus esmarkii). Although we have seen many schools go into the net with the trawl sonar, the catch is disappointing: 30 kg. Most of the fish have escaped through the large meshes in the front net.

We onderbreken de survey om 22:14 UTC op 58.07N-02.38W voor de nacht. We kunnen de volgende ochtend niet verder op dit transect vanwege een windmolenpark in aanbouw. In de nacht varen we naar het begin van het meest noordelijke transect op 58.25N-02.41W. Hier starten we de 's ochtends op 2 juli om 2:46 UTC.

We interrupt the survey at 22:14 UTC at 58.07N-02.38W for the night. We cannot continue on this transect the next morning due to a wind farm under construction. In the night we sail to the western end of the northernmost transect at 58.25N-02.41W. Here we start the morning on July 2 at 02:46 UTC.

Om 7:10 zien we grote scholen op het echogram, zowel boven de bodem als hoog in de waterkolom. We zetten het net uit voor trek 2. Dit levert 4 zakken haring op. Er zitten ook mooie maatjes bij. De maatjes die niet nodig zijn voor de bemonstering worden er door de bemanning uitgehaald: zonde om ze ongebruikt weer overboord te zetten!
At 7:10 we see large schools on the echogram, both above the bottom and high in the water column. We shoot the for haul 2. This yields four bags of herring. The catch contains also nice "maatjes-herring". The "maatjes" that are not needed for sampling are collected by the crew: it would be a shame to put them overboard unused!

Gedurende de rest van de dag zien we niet veel haring. Omstreeks 19:00 UTC op 58.26N-01.45W zetten we het net uit voor trek 3. Op het echogram zijn wat kleine schooltjes vlak boven de grond te zien. Tijdens de trek zien we niets in het net gaan. De vangst bestaat uit een mandje kever. - We don't see much herring during the rest of the day. Around 19:00 UTC at 58.26N-01.45W we shoot the net for haul 3. The echogram shows some small schools just above the bottom. During the haul we see nothing going into the net. The catch consists of a basket of Norway pout.

Trek 3, 2 juli 2019, 58.26N-01.45W, we hebben deze schooltjes niet in het net zien gaan op de trawlsonar. De vangst bestaat uit ca. 30kg kever - Haul 3, 2 July 2019, 58.26N-01.45W, we did not see any of these school enter the net on the trawlsonar. The catch consists of approx. 30kg of Norway pout.
