Voorlopige resultaten/Preliminary results

On Friday 19 July 2019 from 4:00 UTC we are at the quay in Scheveningen near the shed of the Rijksrederij. The shore staff and crew are unloading the heavy material from the herring acoustic survey and are already loading the gear for the Bottom Trawl Survey (BTS) that will start on Monday 27 July 2019. Later in the morning the Tridens moves to the quay at the Vissershavenweg and the researchers are picked up with their equipment (8:00 UTC).

In full sun on the quay at the shet of the Rijksrederij.

In the morning, Serdar quickly makes distribution maps of herring and sprat: the first preliminary results of the Dutch part of the acoustic survey for herring and sprat. In the autumn, the international participants (Scotland, Norway, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands) come together to merge the results.

At 7:15 pm UTC we see small, dark red pillars on the ground. At dusk, one of the schools is quickly picked up with the sonar and caught (haul 22). The catch consists only of sprat (10-14 cm), with the exception of a single broadtal shortfin squid (Illex coindetii).

Normally this survey has to be conducted during the day, but due to time constraints we have continued in the dark to 54.22N-0.16E (24:00 UTC). On Thursday, July 18, 2019, we depart at 3:24 UTC from this position to 54.02N-1.59E, the end point of this survey.

Trek 22, 17 juli 2019, 54.51N-0.49E, 1070 kg sprot - Haul 22, 17 July 2019, 54.51N-0.49E, 1070 kg sprat.

On the trawl sonar you can see that there is a big aggregation entering the net. Right next to the net is a school of fish that escapes.

Trek 23, 18 juli 2019, 54.13N-0.47E, 15kg sprot (4-7cm) - Haul 23, 18 July 2019, 54.13N-0.47E, 15kg of sprat (4-7cm).

The "catch" of haul 23 in the hold consists mainly of old sprat that got stuck in the net after the previous haul.

For some of the jellyfish it is difficult to decide wether they have a yellow (lion's mane) - or blue colour. Blue jellyfish can be yellow(ish)! In this picture there are three real Lion's mane jellyfish, the others are blue jellys.
At 12:34 UTC we arrive at 54.02N-1.59E, the end point of the survey, and set course for Scheveningen.

Kleine Nemo's/Little Nemos

We are approaching the end of this survey. On Wednesday 17 July 2019 we start at 55.10N-1.16W in an easterly direction. At 6:14 UTC we see two schools on which we fish for haul 21. The catch consists of - not entirely unexpected - sprat.

The net is behind the ship during hauling of haul 21.

Trek 21, 17 juli 2019, 55.10N-0.25W, 560kg sprot (10% makreel) - Haul 21, 17 July 2019, 55.10N-0.25W, 560kg sprat (10% mackerel).
De vangst van trek 21 in de last: ongeveer 560kg sprot met 10% makreel en veel gele haarkwallen - The catch of haul 21 in the hold: about 560 kg of sprat with 10% mackerel and lots of  lion's mane jellyfish.
There are also four very small whiting in the catch. They are only 4-6 cm and are easily lost among the larger fish. Moreover, many will have escaped through the large meshes. In reality, a lot more will have swum. We think there is a connection with the large amount of lion's mane - (90) and blue (4) jellyfish in the catch. Young whiting seek protection between the tentacles of the jellyfish, just like clownfish. So they are actually small Nemos. This is not the first time we see this connection between young whiting and jellyfish during this survey.

Little Nemos: young whiting seeks shelter between the tentacles of jellyfish, just like anemone fish with sea anemones. Apparently they are not sensitive to the poison in the nettle cells. Incidentally, this behavior is also known from other cod species and young horse mackerel also seeks cover in this way.

Because we have too little time to finish all transects and, moreover, the last two transects are very difficult due to the height differences - which means that fishing is impossible in many places - and because of wind farms we are adjusting the last three transects from 55.10N-1.33E (17 July 2019,16.13 UTC) to 54.22N-0.16W from where we will set course to 54.02N-1.59E, the position where we will close the survey.
The two southernmost transects at 53.34N and 53.02N are planned in an area with many height differences and wind farms, making it almost impossible to fish and sail the transects.

We start the next morning at 3:25 UTC from 55.43N-1.59E to the west. Tuesday, July 16 is a boring day - we see nothing ... until a big pillar suddenly appears on the screen at 12:34 UTC. Suddenly the excitement of the hunt reigns among the crew and researchers because one such a large school is a beautiful prey, but not so easy to catch.

Trek 20, 16 juli 2019, 55.53N-0.51E, 270kg sprot  met 10% haring -  Haul 20, 16 July 2019, 55.53N-0.51E, 270 kg sprat with 10% herring.
The school hangs loosely above the bottom and moves quickly, so we miss it when we fish back. The school can still be seen on the sonar, just behind us. Skipper Kinne Reichgeld decides to haul the net until the doors come out of the water, turn sharply and when we have the school in front of us, let the net drop again. In fishing this is called "turning on the doors".

The Tridens "turns on the doors": the net is hauled up until the doors surface. In this way the ship can make a sharp turn and fish back after the net has been lowered again.
Men laat het net weer zakken en vist er recht op af - The sonar shows that the school is straight ahead. The net is lowered again and fished straight for it.

De school zwemt naar stuurboord - The school swims to starboard.
With this second attempt it is a hit! On trawl sonar a large, very compact spot appears within the perimeter of the net opening. This could be a big catch. That is not really necessary, because actually we fish to determine the species composition and to take samples to determine height, weight, maturity and age. For this it is not necessary to catch several tons of fish.

It is a direct hit! The trawl sonar shows that a large amount of fish is entering the net.

The net is reached during trek 20. The weather is nice and the trawl is clearly visible on the water surface.
During hauling it appears that the net is heavily damaged.

During hauling it appears that there is a huge hole in the net. The catch - 270 kg sprat and around 10% herring - is much smaller than expected: apparently the majority of the catch escaped through this hole. The sprat and the herring are lucky this time. The crew is out of luck because the net is so badly damaged that it is decided to set up the reserve. The broken net is stored for later repair on shore.

There is a red whelk (Neptunea antiqua) on deck. This is a clear indication that the lower net has been on the bottom: a pelagic trawl has not been designed for this.

The crew ties the damaged net together to store the net for later repair on shore.

Gele - en blauwe haarkwallen (Cyanea capillata en Cyanea lamarckii) in trek 20 - Lion's mane - and blue jellyfish (Cyanea capillata and Cyanea lamarckii) in haul 20.

The smallest individual is 9.5 cm, the largest individual is 14.5 cm.
We reach the western end of the transect at 55.43N-1.33W at 18:10 UTC and set course for the next transect at 55.10N-1.15W: that is slightly northeast of Newcastle.

Back on track after a weekend in Leith

We leave the port of Leith on Monday July 15 at 3:30 UTC to pick up the transect again. Just like last year (16 July 2018) we pass Bass Rock, a large rock on which 10% of the world population of gannets (Morus bassana) breeds. At 11:56 UTC we start at 56.08N-0.10W in an easterly direction.

The speckles are the Gannets on their nests. The species name "bassana" is derived from the name of this rock.

We laten Bass Rock achter ons - Leaving Bass Rock behind.

Bram Couperus (links) en Serdar Sakinan (right) - Bram Couperus (left) and Serdar Sakinan (right).
Occasionally we see a school on the ground, but it is not enough to fish. We also see a blurry blue layer above the bottom. We know from last year that these are probably crystal gobies (Crystallogobius linearis). At 15:21 UTC we see a few more schools together and decide to shoot the net for haul 19. The catch consists of haddock, whiting and some herring, (again) just like last year in this area (haul 14 -16 in 2018).

There are two broadtail shortfin squids (Illex coindetii) in the catch. One of the two has a mantle length of 27 cm: that is - normally - the maximum length of this species.
It appears that our German colleagues are unable to sail the two northernmost transects in the German Bight. That is why we decide to extend the 56.08N and 55.43N transects to 2.00E. They were originally planned till 1.15E. We arrive at 56.08-2.00E at 21:45 UTC and stop for the night.

Rare schelvis/Freak haddock

In the night from Thursday to Friday we steamed to 56.46N-1.30W. On Friday 12 July we sail from this position to the west. The idea is that we will be close to the port of Leith when we arrive at the end of the transect. During the day we see hardly any echo's . At 12:36 very dense schools appear which are very close at the bottom. Wet shoot the net for haul 18.

Trek 18, 12 juli 2019, 56.22N-0.25W, 391 kg kever - Haul 18, 12 July 2019, 56.22N-0.25W, 391 kg Norway pout.
The catch consists of almost 400 kg of Norway pout. Because the fish is so small, they escape through the large meshes in the front net. If that would not happen, the catch would have been much bigger.

The catch is sorted out, because it also consists sprat, grey gurnard, whiting, haddock and some small blue whiting.
- A few Norway pout in the catch are somewhat larger. At first sight a beetle (above) looks like a small whiting (below), but if you look at the head, you see the difference. In whiting, the upper jaw clearly reaches over the lower jaw. This is not the case with Norway pout, the beak is clearly directed upwards and the eye is larger than that of whiting. And - in contrast to whiting - beetle has a tiny barb (visible on the photo at the 33.5mm line).

- A freak haddock in the catch: the animal is very stocky, has a large head and the well-known haddock-spot is marked sharply in this specimen.
De soort is schar (Limanda limanda) - We fished very close to the bottom again: there are five flatfish in the catch. The species is dab (Limanda limanda).
Because we no longer see any fish recordings and therefore do not have to fish, we arrive at 21:38 UTC at the end of the transect at 56.14N-2.25W which is earlier then expected. Here we stop for the night. The next morning we set sail for Leith. On Saturday 13 July at 9:00 AM UTC the pilot will come on board to lead us to the port.

Friday 12 July 2019

Mix, niks, kleine haaien, grote haai en verwarring/Mix, nothing, little sharks, big shark and confusion

On Wednesday 10 July 3:12 UTC we sail west from 57.08N-0.14W. At 6:24 UTC we arrive at 57.08N-1.17W, turning south-east to the next transect. At 7:31 UTC we start from 56:1501.54N-1.00W towards the east. At 10:58 we shoot the net for small schools on the bottom, on the north side of the Devil's holes. The catch consists of a mix of cod-like species (70%) and herring (30%).

Trek 13, 10 juli 2019, 56.54N-0.04E, 78 kg schelvis (50%), haring (30%), wijting, kever - Haul 13, 10 July 2019, 56.54N-0.04E, 78 kg haddock (50%), herring (30%), whiting, Norway pout

Serdar Sakinan analyseert de echogrammen tijdens zijn wacht - Serdar Sakinan analyzes the echograms during his watch.
Here on the sorting belt: herring, mackerel, haddock and Norway pout.

Oude bekende: in de vangst van trek 13 zitten ook vijf jonge blauwe wijtingen - Old acquaintance: in the catch of trek 13 there are also five young blue whiting.
We don't see any fish recordings on the rest of the transect. At 19:19 UTC at 56.53N-2.01E we turn south to 56.38N-2.00E and start at 20:56N on the next transect. Between these two positions we see the only large schools on this day: this is, however, between two transects and will therefore not be included in the calculation of the stock estimate. That is also the reason why we do not fish for it. At 8:57 UTC we stop at 56.38N-1.50E for the night.

Trek 14, 11 juli 2019, 56.38N-1.21E, geen vangst - Haul 14, 11 July 2019, 56.38N-1.21E, no catch.

After heading west at 3:07 on Thursday, July 11, we see schools at 4:35 UTC, loose above the ground on which we fish (Trek 14). Unfortunately we do not see any of these recordings back during the trek. The catch consists of half a basket of jellyfish.

At 9:21 UTC we do another haul above the bottom. This time the catch consists of 310 kg herring and haddock and ... a herring shark! We immediately put it overboard again, without weighing and measuring. It was estimated that it was approximately 210 cm long (from the muzzle to the tip of the tail) and 70 kg. On the clip you can see how he swims away.

Trek 15, 11 juli 2019,  56.37N-0.31E, 310Kg haring en schelvis (en een haringhaai)- Haul 15, 11 July 2019, 56.37N-0.31E, 80 kg herring and haddock (and a porbeagle).

... en een  haringhaai (Lamna nasus, mannetje) van ruim 2 meter - ... and a porbeagle (Lamna nasus, male) of more than 2 meter.

- A porbeagle is a real shark with a beak full of sharp teeth!

Na trek 15 is het dek bezaaid met bodem-leven, zoals zeesterren en noordhorens (Neptunea antiqua) - We use a pelagic trawl for this survey and we are not supposed to hit the bottom. Yet that happens occasionally. After trek 15, the deck is strewn with soil life, such as starfish and red whelk (Neptunea antiqua).

At 14:27 UTC we fish for small red schools in the upper water layer to a depth of 40 m (haul 16). With the current rigging of the net, we cannot fish on the surface. We cannot fish shallower than 30 meters. So it is still possible to take a sample from these schools. After hauling, there is nothing in the pit (just some jellyfish), but there are small sand eels in the meshes.

The "catch" of  haul 16: lion's mane and blue jellyfish, moon jelly, some squids that were left in the net after the previous haul and young sandeels (Ammodytes marinus) that we picked up from the deck.
During haul 16 we see schools on the bottom. We decide to fish for this immediately after the surface haul, so that we can distinguish between the fish on the bottom and the fish higher in the water column. At 15:54 UTC we start shooting for haul 17: half a basket of sprat and whiting.

The catch of haul 17 consists for the most part of sprat.
Ook in de vangst van trek 17: twee slanke pijlinktvissen (Illex coindetii), kwallen en jonge schelvis - Also in the catch of haul 17: two broadtail shortfin squids (Illex coindetii), jellyfish and young haddock.

Op de brug tijdens trek 17 - On the bridge during haul 17.
The catch of haul 17 causes confusion among the researchers. The schools that we have fished upon look like herring. We already had difficulty distinguishing between herring, Norway pout and other gadoids. Now it appears that these types of schools may be just as well sprat...
