De opwinding van de jacht en een school met geluk/The excitement of the hunt and a lucky school

We starten de volgende ochtend om 3:25 UTC vanaf 55.43N-1.59E naar het westen. Dinsdag 16 juli is een saaie dag - we zien niets... tot dat er om 12:34 UTC plotseling een een flinke paal op het scherm verschijnt. Onder de bemanning en de onderzoekers heerst ineens de opwinding van de jacht want één zo'n grote school is een mooie prooi, maar niet zo gemakkelijk om te vangen.
We start the next morning at 3:25 UTC from 55.43N-1.59E to the west. Tuesday, July 16 is a boring day - we see nothing ... until a big pillar suddenly appears on the screen at 12:34 UTC. Suddenly the excitement of the hunt reigns among the crew and researchers because one such a large school is a beautiful prey, but not so easy to catch.

De school hangt los boven de bodem en verplaatst zich snel, waardoor we hem missen wanneer we terug vissen. De school is nog wel te zien op de sonar, schuin achter ons. Schipper Kinne Reichgeld besluit om het net te halen tot de borden boven water komen, scherp te draaien en als we de school recht voor ons hebben het net weer te laten zakken. In de visserij heet dit "op de de borden draaien".
The school hangs loosely above the bottom and moves quickly, so we miss it when we fish back. The school can still be seen on the sonar, just behind us. Skipper Kinne Reichgeld decides to haul the net until the doors come out of the water, turn sharply and when we have the school in front of us, let the net drop again. In fishing this is called "turning on the doors".

De Tridens "draait op de borden": het net wordt opgehaald tot de borden boven water komen. Zo kan het schip een scherpe draai kan maken en terug vissen nadat men het net weer heeft laten zakken - The Tridens "turns on the doors": the net is hauled up until the doors surface. In this way the ship can make a sharp turn and fish back after the net has been lowered again.

Op de sonar is te zien dat de school zich recht vooruit bevindt. Men laat het net weer zakken en vist er recht op af - The sonar shows that the school is straight ahead. The net is lowered again and fished straight for it.

De school zwemt naar stuurboord - The school swims to starboard.

Bij deze tweede poging is het raak! Op trawlsonar verschint een grote, zeer compacte vlek binnen de omtrek van de netopening. Dit zou wel eens een flinke vangst kunnen worden. Dat is eigenlijk niet nodig, want uiteindelijk vissen we om te bepalen wat de soortsamenstelling is en om monsters te nemen voor de bepaling van lengte, gewicht, rijpheid en leeftijd. Hiervoor is het niet nodig om meerdere tonnen vis te vangen.
With this second attempt it is a hit! On trawl sonar a large, very compact spot appears within the perimeter of the net opening. This could be a big catch. That is not really necessary, because actually we fish to determine the species composition and to take samples to determine height, weight, maturity and age. For this it is not necessary to catch several tons of fish.

Het is een voltreffer! Op de trawlsonar is te zien dat er een grote hoeveelheid vis het net ingaat - It is a direct hit! The trawl sonar shows that a large amount of fish is entering the net.  

Het net wordt gehaald tijdens trek 20. Het is mooi weer en het trawlnet is goed zichtbaar aan het wateroppervlak -The net is reached during trek 20. The weather is nice and the trawl is clearly visible on the water surface.

Bij het halen blijkt dat het net flink beschadigd is - During hauling it appears that the net is heavily damaged.

Bij het halen blijkt dat er een enorm gat in het net zit. De vangst - 270 kg sprot en ongeveer 10% haring - is veel kleiner dan verwacht: kennelijk is het grootste deel van de vangst ontsnapt door dit gat. De sprot en de haring hebben dit keer geluk. De bemanning heeft pech want het is zo zwaar beschadigd dat besloten wordt het reserve net op te tuigen. Het kapotte net wordt opgeborgen om later aan de wal te repareren.
During hauling it appears that there is a huge hole in the net. The catch - 270 kg sprat and around 10% herring - is much smaller than expected: apparently the majority of the catch escaped through this hole. The sprat and the herring are lucky this time. The crew is out of luck because the net is so badly damaged that it is decided to set up the reserve. The broken net is stored for later repair on shore.

Er ligt een noordhoren (Neptunea antiqua) aan deck. Dit is een duidelijke aanwijzing dat het ondernet op de bodem is geweest: daarvoor is een pelagische trawl niet ontworpen - There is a red whelk (Neptunea antiqua) on deck. This is a clear indication that the lower net has been on the bottom: a pelagic trawl has not been designed for this.

Nog een bodembewoner: de zeester Hippasteria phrygiana - Another bottom dweller: the rigid cushion sea star (Hippasteria phrygiana).

De bemanning bindt het beschadigde net bijelkaar om het net op te bergen voor reparatie aan de wal - The crew ties the damaged net together to store the net for later repair on shore.

Gele - en blauwe haarkwallen (Cyanea capillata en Cyanea lamarckii) in trek 20 - Lion's mane - and blue jellyfish (Cyanea capillata and Cyanea lamarckii) in haul 20.

Het sprotmonster van trek 20 gesorteerd in halve cm-klassen. Het kleinste exemplaar is 9.5 cm, het grootste exemplaar is 14.5 cm - The sprat monster of haul 20 sorted in half cm classes. The smallest individual is 9.5 cm, the largest individual is 14.5 cm.

We bereiken om 18:10 UTC het westelijke uiteinde van het transect op 55.43N-1.33W en zetten koers naar het volgende transect op 55.10N-1.15W: dat is iets ten noordoosten van Newcastle.
We reach the western end of the transect at 55.43N-1.33W at 18:10 UTC and set course for the next transect at 55.10N-1.15W: that is slightly northeast of Newcastle.
