Op  woensdag 10 juli varen we om 3:12 UTC 57.08N-0.14W richting west. Om 6:24 UTC arriveren we op 57.08N-1.17W, draaien naar zuidoost naar het volgende transect. Om 7:31 UTC starten we vanaf 56:54N-1.00W richting het oosten. Om 10:58 zetten we uit op kleine schooltjes op de bodem, aan de noordkant van de Duivelse gaten. De vangst bestaat voor uit een mix van kabeljauwachtigen (70%) en haring (30%).

On Wednesday 10 July 3:12 UTC we sail west from 57.08N-0.14W. At 6:24 UTC we arrive at 57.08N-1.17W, turning south-east to the next transect. At 7:31 UTC we start from 56:1501.54N-1.00W towards the east. At 10:58 we shoot the net for small schools on the bottom, on the north side of the Devil's holes. The catch consists of a mix of cod-like species (70%) and herring (30%).

De vangst van trek 13 is een mix van verschillende soorten. Hier op de band: haring, makreel, schelvis,wijting en kever - The catch of haul 13 is a mix of different species. Here on the sorting belt: herring, mackerel, haddock and Norway pout.

Op de rest van het transect zien we geen aantekeningen van vis. Om 19:19 UTC op 56.53N-2.01E draaien we zuid naar 56.38N-2.00E en beginnen om 20:56N aan het volgende transect. Tussen deze twee posities zien we op deze dag de enige grote scholen: dit is echter tussen twee transecten in en telt dus niet mee bij het berekenen van de bestandsschatting. Dat is ook de reden dat we er niet op vissen. Om 20:57 UTC stoppen we op 56.38N-1.50E voor de nacht.

We don't see any fish recordings on the rest of the transect. At 19:19 UTC at 56.53N-2.01E we turn south to 56.38N-2.00E and start at 20:56N on the next transect. Between these two positions we see the only large schools on this day: this is, however, between two transects and will therefore not be included in the calculation of the stock estimate. That is also the reason why we do not fish for it. At 8:57 UTC we stop at 56.38N-1.50E for the night.

Trek 14, 11 juli 2019, 56.38N-1.21E, geen vangst - Haul 14, 11 July 2019, 56.38N-1.21E, no catch.

Nadat we op donderdag 11 juli om 3:07 naar het westen varen, zien we om 4:35 UTC schooltjes, los boven de grond waarop we vissen (Trek 14). Helaas zien we tijdens de trek niets terug van deze aantekeningen. De vangst bestaat uit een halve mand kwallen.

Om 9:21 UTC doen we weer een trek boven de bodem. Dit keer bestaat de vangst uit 310 kg haring en schelvis en ... een haringhaai! We hebben hem meteen weer overboord gezet, zonder te wegen en te meten. Naar schatting was hij ongeveer 210 cm lang (van de snuit naar het puntje van de staart) en 70 kg. Op de clip kun je zien hoe hij wegzwemt.

Voor deze survey gebruiken we een pelagisch net en het is niet de bedoeling dat dat we de bodem raken. Toch gebeurd dat af en toe. Na trek 15 is het dek bezaaid met bodem-leven, zoals zeesterren en noordhorens (Neptunea antiqua) - We use a pelagic trawl for this survey and we are not supposed to hit the bottom. Om 14:27 UTC vissen we op kleine rode schooltjes in de bovenste waterlaag tot 40m diepte (trek 16). Met de huidige optuiging van het net kunnen we niet aan de oppervlakte vissen. We kunnen niet ondieper vissen dan 30 meter. Het lukt dus nog net om een monster te nemen van deze schooltjes. Na het halen zit er niets in de kuil (alleen wat kwallen), maar er steken wel kleine zandspieringen in de mazen.
At 14:27 UTC we fish for small red schools in the upper water layer to a depth of 40 m (haul 16). With the current rigging of the net, we cannot fish on the surface. We cannot fish shallower than 30 meters. So it is still possible to take a sample from these schools. Trek 16, 11 juli 2019, 56.38N-0.24W (op schooltjes hoog in de water kolom), geen vangst in de kuil, maar wel zandspiering in de mazen en op het dek - Haul 16, 11 July 2019, 56.38N-0.24W (at schools high in the water column), no catch in the codend, but sandeels in the meshes and on the deck.

De "vangst" van trek 16: gele - en blauwe haarkwallen, oorkwallen, enkele pijlinkvissen die waren achtergebleven in het net na de vorige trek en jonge zandspieringen (Ammodytes marinus) die we hebben opgeraapt van het dek - The "catch" of  haul 16: lion's mane and blue jellyfish, moon jelly, some squids that were left in the net after the previous haul and young sandeels (Ammodytes marinus) that we picked up from the deck.

Tijdens trek 16 zien we schooltjes op de bodem. We besluiten hierop te vissen direct na de oppervlakte-trek, zodat we onderscheid kunnen maken tussen de vis op de bodem en de vis hoger in de waterkolom. Om 15:54 UTC beginnen we met het uitzetten voor trek 17: een halve mand sprot en wijting.

De vangst van trek 17 veroorzaakt verwaaring onder de onderzoekers. De schooltjes waar we op hebben gevist lijken sprekend op haring. We hadden al moeite om onderscheid te maken tussen haring, kever en andere kabeljauwachtigen. Nu blijkt het bij dit soort schooltjes ook heel goed om sprot te kunnen gaan...
