Kleine ontsnappingskunstenaar/Little escapist

Na trek 5 varen we door op het 58.10N transect in westelijke richting. We stoppen aan het einde van het transect op 58.10N-02.24W voor de nacht. De volgende ochtend, donderdag 4 juli, beginnen we aan het volgende transect op 57.55N-02.06W naar het oosten. De scholen die 'snachts oplossen beginnen zich weer te vormen. Om 5:30 zetten we uit op een laag 25m boven de bodem.
After haul 5 we proceed on the 58.10N transect in western direction. We stop at the and of the transect at 58.10N-02.24W at 20:57 UTC for the night. The next morning, Thursday 4 July, we start at the next transect at 2:20 UTC at 57.55N-02.6W. The fish that swam dispersed during the night start to aggregate in schools again. At 5:30 we shoot the net for a layer at 25m above the bottom.

De vangst bestaat uit jonge schelvis en sprot met hier en daar een juveniele haring.

The catch consists of young haddock, sprat and also some juvenile herring.

Tussen de jong schelvis, blijken ook enkele kevers te zitten. Deze zijn te ondersecheiden van schelvis doordat ze geen wit-omrande zwarte vlek hebben achter de borstvin - It appears that, between the young haddock, there are some Norway pout. They can be distinguished from haddock, because they do not have the typical white rimmed black spot behind the pelvis fin.

Tijdens het sorteren van de vangst kruipt er een noordzee-octopusje (Eledone cirrhosa) op de sorteerband. We doen hem in een emmer met zeewater, maar daaruit ontsnapt hij snel. Nadat we hem gewogen hebben laat bemanningslid Ton Meijer hem snel vrij.
During sorting of the catch, a curled octopus (Eledone cirrhosa) is crawling on the sorting belt. We put it in a basket of sea water, but he manages to escape rapidly. After taking record of its weight, crew member Ton Meijer releases it.

In de vangst van trek 6 bevindt zich een noordzee-octopus (Eledone cirrhosa) - In the catch of haul 6 is a curled octopus (Eledone cirrhosa).

De octopussoort die je hier ziet is niet dezelfde soort als de bekende octopus uit de Middellandse zee (Octopus vulgaris). De Noordzee octopus (Eledone cirrhosa) heeft één rij zuignappen op elke arm. Je kunt dit goed zien op het clipje met de emmer als hij op zijn kop hangt. Octopus vulgaris heeft twee rijen.

The octopus species that you see here is not the same species as the well-known Mediterranean octopus (Octopus vulgaris). The North Sea octopus (Eledone cirrhosa) has one row of suction cups on each arm. You can see this well on the clip with the bucket when it is hanging upside down. Octopus vulgaris has two rows.

Twee kromme pijlinkvissen (Todaropsis eblanae) - Two lesser flying squid (Todaropsis eblanae).

Om 11:23 en 16:30 UTC stoppen we om te vissen op kleine schooltjes op de bodem (trek 7 en 8). De vangst van beide trekken bestaat uit haring.  At 11:23 and 16:30 UTC we stop to fish for small schools at the bottom (haul 7 and 8). In both hauls the catch consists of herring.
