Uitstekende maatjes - Excellent maatjes

On Monday, July 5, we take off at 3:00 UTC from 57.43N-0.31E heading west. We don't see anything on the echosounder. At the coast the bottom becomes irregular and one can see some thin schools (mackerel?), on the bottom some small red schools that we attribute to gadoid fish and some red "scratching" above the bottom which we suspect are young gadoids as well . It's all too little and too hard to fish for. At 11:00 UTC at 57.43N-1.51W we turn southeast; at 12:35 UTC at 57.28N-1.40W begin the new transect, heading east.

Louwe Post, André Dijkman-Dulkes en Dirk Burggraaf keuren de haring. - Louwe Post, André Dijkman-Dulkes and Dirk Burggraaf taste maatjes herring.

Before lunch, we taste "maatjes" (Dutch fermented herring). It turns out that the herring is really of exceptional quality! In the absence of nice recordings, we shoot the net at 16:52 UTC on minimal schools and some small "specks" on the echogram (haul 13): if you see very little during a hydro-acoustic survey, in the end you will have to fish on very little, in order to be able to assign the correct species to the observed echoes later on the echogram. The catch consists of haddock, whiting and Norway pout.

We stop at 21:01 UTC at 57.28N-0.19E and pick up where we left off again the following morning (Tuesday, July 6) at 3:00 UTC, heading east.

As on the previous transect, herring schools appear high above the bottom (8:04 UTC). They are very detectable on the sonar, but no matter what we try, we can't get a hold of one this time. The catch from haul 14 consists of haddock and whiting fished from the bottom during the haul: there is not a single herring in it!

Trek 14, 6 juli 2021, 57.27.86N-1.53.62,75%, 250kg: 75% schelvis en 25% wijting. - Trek 14, 6 July 2021, 57.27.86N-1.53.62,75%, 250kg: 75% haddock en 25% whiting.
