Herring Acoustic Survey: Eindelijk weer haring en sprot!

Op maandagochtend 19 juli 2021 beginnen we de dag met het nemen van een CTD-opname om 4:00 UTC op 55.28.28N-1.21.74E, waarna we koers zetten naar het westen. Meteen zien we veel schooltjes, maar we kunnen er niet op vissen vanweg de ruwe bodem. Wanneer de bodem bevisbaar wordt en er nog steeds scholen te zien zijn, slaat het noodlot toe: de brandstofpomp van een van de hoofdmotoren begeeft het. Dit betekent voor de rest van de survey dat vissen op moeilijke bodem niet meer verantwoord is en dat we bij dezelfde survey-snelheid (10 knopen) op een motor zullen moeten varen, hetgeen meer storing op het echogram veroorzaakt. Terwijl de machinisten en kapitein bellen met het thuisfront, varen we toch maar door. Op deze locatie zullen we het dus moeten doen zonder vangstinformatie van de echo's op de bodem.

On Monday morning, July 19, 2021, we begin the day by carrying out a CTD downcast at 4:00 UTC, 55.28.28N-1.21.74E, after which we will head west. Immediately we see many schools, but we cannot fish for them because of the rough bottom. When the bottom becomes fishable and schools can still be seen, disaster strikes: the fuel pump of one of the main engines fails. For the rest of the survey this means that fishing on difficult bottoms is no longer justified and that we will have to sail at the same survey speed (10 knots) on one engine, which causes more noise on the echogram. While the engineers and captain call the home front, we sail on anyway. At this location we will therefore have to do without catch information from the echoes on the bottom.

Wanneer we dichtbij het westelijke uiteinde van het transect zijn, zien we een ander soort scholen: grote en kleine, iets boven de bodem. Daarnaast is er een laag zichtbaar op de 120 en 200kHz frekwenties. Van dit gebied weten we dat de bodem zacht is en we besluiten te vissen (14:09, trek 24). De vangst bestaat voor 90% uit sprot en voor 10% uit jonge haring van 16-20cm. Eindelijk weer haring en sprot!

When we get close to the western end of the transect, we see a different kind of schools: large and small, slightly above the bottom. In addition, a layer is visible on the 120 and 200 kHz frequencies. From this area we know that the bottom is soft and we decide to fish (14:09, haul 24). The catch consists of 90% sprat and 10% young herring of 16-20cm. Finally herring and sprat again!

De wat grotere school links op het echogram is wellicht afkomstig van sprot; de blauwige zigzag laag bij deze school kunnen we toeschrijven aan noordelijke krill (Meganyctiphanes norvegica); de kleine rode schooltjes schrijven we toe aan jonge haring. - Haul 24, 19 July 2021, 55.28.07N-1.11.91W, 3015kg: 90% sprat and 10% young herring. The somewhat larger school on the left of the echogram may be from sprat; the bluish zigzag layer near this school can be attributed to northern krill (Meganyctiphanes norvegica); we attribute the small red schools to young herring.

De blauwige zigzaglaag op het 38kHz echogram, tekent veel sterker op de echogrammen van 120 en 200kHz, terwijl de sprotschool juist minder goed waarneembaar is. - The bluish zigzag layer on the 38kHz echogram is much more pronounced on the 120 and 200kHz echograms, in contrast to the sprat school which is hardly perceptible.

De vangst van trek 24 bestaat vooral uit sprot. - The catch of haul 24 consists mainly of sprat.

De overige soorten (makreel, grauwe poon) worden uit de vangst gehaald en er worden enkele manden sprot en haring verameld voor verdere bemonstering. - The other species (mackerel, gray gurnard) are taken from the catch and a few baskets of sprat and herring are collected for further sampling.

De haring wordt gesorteerd op lengte. - The herring is sorted by length class.

Van de noordelijke krill vind je niets terug in de het net, maar wel in de magen van sprot, haring (foto) en makreel. - You will not find anything of the northern krill in the net, but you can find it in the stomachs of sprat, herring (photo) and mackerel.

De maaginhoud van een jonge haring: de lange lijfjes en de ogene van de krill zijn duidelijke waarneembaar. - The stomach contents of a young herring: the long bodies and the eyes of the krill are clearly visible.

Beanne haalt de otolieten (gehoorsteentjes) uit de verzamelde sprot. Met behulp van de de groeiringen op de otolieten, kunnen we de leeftijd bepalen. - Beanne removes the otoliths (hearing stones) from the collected sprat. Using the growth rings on the otoliths, we can determine the age.

Trek 24 hebben we uitgevoerd op het einde van het transect en we hebben in zuidelijke richting gevist in de richting van het nieuwe transect op 54.58.58N-1.0641W. We komen aan op dit punt om 18:28 UTC en draaien naar het oosten. Na een half uur zien we losse aantekeningen op het echogram - "van Gogh spikkels" -, bestaande uit individueel zwemmende vissen en mini-schooltjes. We zetten hierop uit voor trek 25. De vangst bestaat uit 100% wijting. Na trek 25 wordt het al donker stoppen we voor de nacht om ongeveer 20:00 UTC op 54.58.53N-0.56.58W.

We carried out pull 24 at the end of the transect and fished south towards the new transect at 54.58.58N-1.0641W. We arrive at this point at 18:28 UTC and turn east. After half an hour we see loose recordings - "van Gogh speckles" - consisting of individual swimming fish and mini-schools. We shoot the net for haul 25. The catch consists of 100% whiting. It becomes dark after haul 25 and we stop for the night at approximately 20:00 UTC at 54.58.53N-0.56.58W.
