Thuis!/Back home!

Thursday 20 July at 16:30 UTC we arrive at the port of Scheveningen. After this survey the results will be analysed together with the results from the other participating vessels, the research vessels from Germany, Scotland, Denmark and Norway. Only than we will know how much adult and juvenile herring there is in the North Sea.

This map shows the relative abundance of herring in the area that has been surveyed by us. The bubbles per interval of 5 nautical mile are a measure for the quantity of herring.
The next morning (friday 21 July), the heavy pieces of equipment is being unloaded. We fishery researchers depart at 9:00 UTC homewards to our building of Wageningen Marine Research in IJmuiden.

The heavier pieces of equipment are being unloaded at the quay in Scheveningen.

Het schip van de kustwacht, de "Barend Biesheuvel" ligt in de zon aan de kade/ The vessel of the coastguard Baren Biesheuvel" lies in the sun at the quay.

Haringhaai en kleine pietermannen/ Porbeagle and lesser weevers

On the 55.17N and 54.47N transects we keep seeing small schools at the bottom. On 17 and 18 July we have been fishing for these records with varying results. We suspect that the red schools - which appear relatively strong on the lower frequencies - escape from the net. The catches are small and consist always for a part of mackerel and/or some gadoids.

Trek 19 - 17 juli 7:30 UTC 55.17N-1.02W: 300 kg sprot/ Haul 19 - 17 July 7:30 UTC 55.17N-1.02W: 300 kg sprat

In the catch of haul 19 are two squids, Illex and Todaropsis. Here is a description of how these two species can be distinguised from European an/or Long vinned squid, Loligo and how to recognize the species.

Haul 22 on 18 July 13:10 UTC contained 2 tons of mackerel and a really large porpeagle. The shark fell into the hold and the crew hoisted the heavy animal to the fishing deck, where is was released. The animal (a she) was alive. Let's hope that she survived. It is not easy to put large incidental bycatches over board in an animal friendly way. We will try to develop a routine to do this in the best possible way in the future. It is much easier if an animal is smaller. On 23 March, in the blue whiting survey, we released a porbeagle alive by carrying is with three man up the stairs and drop it over the side.

Haul 23 at 19 July 5:20 UTC 54.17N-0.17W is again directed to the same type of schools, but now the catch consists of a few baskets of herring en... lesser weever. This catch is sorted care, because these little fishes have poisoned spines on the back and the gill covers.

/We keep fishing on little schools at the bottom, but this does not give as a sample of herring or sprat.

Three herrings and a sprat in haul 17. Not enough for a sample, but proof that they are actually down there!
On Friday 14 July we try it one more time. We shoot the net for small schools above the bottom. Later during the haul we see recordings at the surface. We haul the net to the surface and fish for some time through this surface layer. The catch is hardly more than a basket of mackerel. We suspect that the schools do not consist of mackerel, but that we actually missed the schools, both the lower and the higher ones.
Trek 18 - 14 juli 8:15 UTC 56.01N-0.08E: 40kg makreel/ Haul 18 - 14 July 8:15 UTC 56.01N-0.08E: 40kg mackerel

During haul 18 we also see schools at the surface. Halfway during the haul we hoisted up the net in order to fish for some time in this surface layer.  The catch was mackerel, but we suspect that the schools we fished for escaped from the net.
Op zaterdagochtend 15 juli 6:30 UTC lopen we binnen in de haven van Sunderland/ On Saturday morning 15 July at 6:30 UTC we enter the port of Sunderland

Lege transecten, jonge wijting, kwallen en een pijpleiding/ Empty transects, young whiting, jellyfish and a pipeline

On Thursday morning 13 July at 9:30 UTC we find ourselves at 5617N-0.28W heading east. The last three transects we have not seen herring. Normally in this area, we see three year old herring: that is the year class of which a large part has become adult and takes part in the spawning.
The only schools we recorded and on which we fished (Haul 13, 11 July 5:30 UTC 57.01N-0.13W), turned out to consist of haddock. There were 28 individuals of juvenile in the catch: probably we picked these up at the surface during hauling of the net. Indeed, on the echogram shortly before the haul, there were small red recordings at the surface.

After haul 13 we have only incidentally seen a small school: not worth to target these for fish sampling. Yesterday (12 July, haul 14) we fished on a dense plankton layer as there was nothing else to fish on. The catch consisted of a basket of lion's mane jellyfish and a a few young Norway whiting. Possibly these little fish sheltered between the tentacles of the jellyfish - just like clownfish in an anemone. It is known that juveniles of gadoids do this sometimes.

Trek 14 - 12 juli 12:45 UTC 56.31N-1.31E: 20 kg gele haarkwallen, enkele jonge wijtingtjes, 1 sprotje en 3 makrelen/ Haul 14 - 12 July 12:45 UTC 56.31N-1.31E: 20 kg lion's mane jellyfish, some small whiting 1 sprat and 3 mackerels.

Vooraan ligt een sprot/ Lion's mane jellyfish and young whiting in haul 14. Young gadoids take shelter between the tentacles of jellyfish just like clownfish in an anemone. In front lies a sprat.

The sound pulse generated by the echosounder is ringing in the metal tube. This is presented on the echogram as a series of dots perpendicular under the bottom where the pipeline is.

Een transect zonder haring/ A transect without herring

We are now (10 July 16:00 UTC) at the north-south track between the 57.16N transect and the 57.01N transect at 2.0E . There was no herring on the 57.16N transect. We fished on the only schools we saw on the echogram. The catch was a basket of jellyfish, young and adult Norway pout and young haddock. Presumably these small fish escaped through the large meshes in the front net, hence the small catch.

Trek 12 - 10 juli 11:40 UTC 57.16N-1.41E: 20kg  jonge en volwassen kever en jonge schelvis/ Haul 12 - 10 July 11:40 UTC 57.16N-1.41E: 20kg young and adult Norway pout and young haddock.

De eerste maatjes en een kleine Burgemeester/The first maatjes herring and a Iceland gull

This morning we arrived at the western end of the fourth transect (57.31N-1.43W). At the bow we spot a rather white gull, an Iceland gull. This species breeds on Greenland and the American Arctic and is rarely seen in this area. The plumage of this specimen indicated that this is a subadult of two years old.
Een kleine burgemeester (Larus glaucoides) op de boeg tijdens trek 11 (7/7 5:30 UTC 57.31N-1.19E). Rechts een paar drieteenmeeuwen/ An Iceland gull (Larus glaucoides) on the bow during haul 11 (7/7 5:30 UTC 57.31N-1.19E). At the right two kittiwakes.

At the 57.31N transect we saw less herring than in the more northern transects. However, the three hauls we carried out, contained more than enough herring for sampling.

Trek 8 - 6 juli 11:21 57.31N-0.46E: 1.1 ton haring/ Haul 8 - 6 July 11:21 57.31N-0.46E: 1.1 ton herring.
Trek 9 - 6 juli 16:30 57.31N-0.08E: 800 kg haring/ Haul 9 - 6 July 16:30 57.31N-0.08E: 800 kg herring.

Trek 10 - 6 juli 19:45 57.31N-0.18W: 2 ton haring/ Haul 10 - 6 July 19:45 57.31N-0.18W: 2 ton herring

Shortly before the end of the transect we fish for some light echo's at the bottom. The last fifteen minutes of the haul we tow the trawl at approximately 30m below the surface where we saw some red schools on the echogram. The catch consists of whiting (from the bottom) and some sprat (from the surface).
Trek 11 - 7 juli 5:30 57.31N-1.19W: 400kg wijting (en een paar sprotjes)/ Haul 11 - 7 July 5:30 57.31N-1.19W: 400kg whiting (and a few sprats)

/The first homemade maatjes-herring of this season are ready for tasting. Here Arie Jan is relishing a particular good specimen!

Wijting, kwallen en veel haring/Whiting, jellyfish and a lot of herring

The survey is continued in very good weather conditions. On 5 July we sail the 57.46N transect in eastern direction and carry out two hauls. In the morning we fish for schools at the surface. The catch is a basket of whiting and jellyfish. Does this mean that the schools consist of whiting? Whiting normally lives close to the bottom. In the stomachs we find young gadoids: may be the schools consist of these small fishes which we do not see in the catch because they slipped through the meshes? We are not sure about this. However, there is no indication that these schools consist of herring or sprat.

Trek 6 - 5 juli 9:49 57.46N-1.46W: 30 kg wijting en kwallen/ Haul 6 5 juli 9:49 57.46N-1.46: whiting and jellyfish

A mackerel in the catch of haul 6 and some dead haring from the last haul

Verschillende soorten kwallen: gele haarkwal (Cyanea capillata), oorkwal (Aurelia aurita) en blauwe haarkwal (Cyanea lamarcki)/ Different species of jellyfish: lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata), moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) and bluefire jellyfish (Cyanea lamarcki)

Blauwe haarkwal (Cyanea lamarcki)/ bluefire jellyfish (Cyanea lamarcki)

Oorkwal (Aurelia aurita)/ moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita)

In the afternoon we fish for classic herring schools: herring "pillars" (Haul 7 14:30 57.46N-0.39W). For our research we only need a few hundred fishes, but with so many dense, large schools it is hard avoiding a full net. The catch is approximately 15 ton of herring.

Trek 7 - 5 juli 14:30 57.46N-0.39W; 15 ton haring/ Haul 7 - 5 juli 14:30 57.46N-0.39W; 15 ton herring
