Kever en kwallen - Norway pout and lion's manes

During the trip we analyze the echograms. Using the catch composition of the fish hauls, we assign fish species to the observed schools. Per nautical mile, we can then calculate an acoustic surface for each species. This value, with the unit square meter per square nautical mile (m2 / nm2), is called the "Nautical Area Scattering Coefficient" and often simply referred to as "SA". We will later convert the values into numbers and biomass fish. Below is a map showing the transects until last night (June 29), the locations of the fish hauls and the preliminary values we found for herring. It will not surprise the follower of this blog that the SA values in this area are much lower than in previous years. Besides, the little herring we caught was not yet mature. We are doing this research together with Scotland (north of the Tridens area), Norway (north-east of our area), Germany (German bight and the southern North Sea) and Denmark (Skagerrak and western Baltic Sea). Let's hope that the other countries see a lot of herring! It is expected that there is a lot of herring in the Scottish area. There the pelagic fleet is currently fishing for herring.

- Upper map shows the tracks covered till yesterday evening (29 June) with bubbles representing the preliminary distribution of herring so far. The lower map shows trawl- and CTD stations carried out so far.

- We start the day at 3:09 UTC from the starting point of the 57.22N transect at 1.33W with a CTD (nr 13) and sail east. At 7:52, schools on the bottom appear on the echogram, on which we shoot the net. The catch consists of haddock, whiting and Norway pout (the Norway pout's size is 12-15cm this time).

Trek 11, 30 juni 2020, 57.22N-0.02W, 1400kg schelvis, kever, wijting (makreel en ook 8 kg haring). - Trek 11, June 30, 2020, 57.22N-0.02W, 1400kg haddock, Norway pout, whiting (mackerel and also 8kg herring).

- The codend with the catch just before it is landed on deck. The "weed" on the deck falls from the net. They are moss animal colonies, (probably Securiflustra securifrons). It is a clear indication that the net has hit the ground, as these types of colonies live on the sea floor.

De vangst van trek 11 op de opvoerband. Het is een mengsel van kabeljauwachtigen. - The catch of haul 11 at the conveyor belt. It is a mixture of gadoids.

- We have a shortage of baskets when sorting the catch.

Een mand met kever. - A basket with Norway pout.

- Some species that were picked up from the bottom during haul 11: 2 starfish (Porania pulvillus), a few pieces of moss animal colony (Securiflustra securifrons?), A hermit crab (Pagurus prideauxi) with an anemone as a house (Adamsia sp.), a hooknose (Agonus cataphractus) and a ling (Molva molva).

- While sailing east, we continue to see schools at the bottom. At 13:25 UTC we fish for it again. The catch consists of Norway pout.

Trek 12, 30 juni 2020, 57.22N-0.52E, 800kg kever (with some schelvis, grauwe poon, wijting, makreel and kwallen). - Haul 12, June 30, 2020, 57.22N-0.52E, 800kg Norway pout (with some haddock, grey gurnard, whiting, mackerel and jellyfish).

- The catch of haul 12 on the conveyor belt. On the Norway is a large lion's mane jellyfish.

Haarkwallen in trek 12. - Jellyfish in haul 12. The brown-yellow specimens are lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata). The blue specimens may be juveniles of the same species, but they may also be blue jellyfish (Cyanea lamarckii).

- The small radial rows of holes in the muscles of yellow hair jellyfish distinguish this species from the blue jellyfish. Blue jellyfish can also have a yellow colour.

- Is this a young lion's mane - (Cyanea capillata) or a blue jellyfish (Cyanea lamarckii)?

- Survey progress until 6 June 2020 at 18:18 UTC.

- We continue to the eastern end of the transect (19:27 UTC, 57.22N-2.00E). We researchers stop for the night while Tridens sails south on the way to the next transect.

Meer spikkels - More speckles

Monday, June 29, 2020 is a day with more of the same. We started at 3:03 UTC at 57.37N-2.00E westbound. And we fished successively at 5:23 UTC, 57.37N-1.24E (haul 9) and at 14:24 UTC, 57.37N-0.29W (haul 10) for ... "speckles": the now well-known small red-green schools 10-20m above the bottom. Again no herring, instead young Norway pout.

Trek 9, 29 juni 2020, 57.32N-1.24E, 95kg schelvis, wijting, gele haarkwal en kleine kever (5-7cm). - Haul 9, 29 June 2020, 57.32N-1.24E, 95kg haddock, whiting, lion's mane jellyfish and small Norway pout (5-7cm).

- The catch of haul 9 consists of haddock, whiting and very small Norway pout.

Trek 10, 29 juni 2020, 57.37N-0.29W, 20kg schelvis, gele haarkwal, enkele makrelen, 3 haringen en weer veel kleine kever (3-6cm). - Haul 10, June 29, 2020, 57.37N-0.29W, 20kg haddock, lion's mane jellyfish, some mackerels, 3 herrings and again a lot of small Norway pout (3-6cm).

Sunday 28 June 2020

Zondag, dag rustig weer - Sunday, bye bye calm conditions

Early in the morning at 3:03 UTC on Sunday 28 June, we start on a new transect at 57.52N-2.02W eastwards, after we have first carried out a CTD measurement (no 8). A little later we shoot the net on the same kind of red-green "speckles" that we fished yesterday. And again mate Dirk van Rijn was on watch. People on board are already talking about "Dirk speckles". The catch consists of about 100 kg of sprat with some haddock and lion's mane jellyfish.
Trek 8, 28 juni 2020, 57.52N-1.11W, 100kg sprot (en schelvis en gele haarkwallen). - Trek 8, 28 June 2020, 57.52N-1.11W, 100kg sprat (and haddock and lion's mane jellyfish).

- Sprat at the conveyor belt and a lion's man jellyfish.

After this haul we sail further east without seeing indications of fish on the echogram. The wind picks up to Z 6-7 Beaufort. The pleasant sailing over a calm, sun-drenched North Sea is over. When we turn south at the eastern end of the transect (18:41 UTC, 57.52N-1.59E) into the waves, we reduce the speed of 10 - down to 5 knots.

Moray Firth

On Saturday, June 27, we start at 3:16 UTC from where we left off the day before (58.07N-0.57W) in western direction towards the Moray Firth. At 4:31 UTC we fish for small, green-red "speckles" about 20m above the bottom. The catch is a mixture of haddock, whiting, mackerel, Norway pout, sprat and herring. Since the Norway pout, sprat and herring are much smaller, we assume that most specimens of these species have escaped through the large meshes of the front net. Probably, the observed echoes can mainly be attributed to these three species.

Trek 6, 27 juni 2020, 58.07N-1.17W, 154kg mixed catch (18kg schelvis, 22kg wijting, 6kg makreel, 3.5kg kever, 4.5kg sprot, 1kg haring)  -  Haul 6, 26 June 2020, 58.07N-1.17W, 154kg mixed catch (18kg haddock, 22kg whiting, 6kg mackerel, 3.5kg Norway pout, 4.5 sprat, 1kg herring).

De vangst van trek 6 op de opvoerband. - The catch of haul 6 on the conveyor belt.

- The fish species in the catch of haul 6: mackerel, haddock, herring, sprat and Norway pout.

- Beanne Snaar en André Dijkman Dulkes measure and weigh the individual herring.

- A lesser flying squid (Todaropsis eblanae). This is an adult male. You can tell by the two lower arms that are adapted to store and transfer sperm to the female. Such an arm is called a "hectocotylus".

- The two hectocotylised arms of the lesser flying squid.

At 10:01 UTC at 58.07N-2.28W we arrive at the outer transect in the Moray Firth and sail in a southwesterly direction; from 12:31 UTC, 57.46N-2.07W, we sail west along the coast and at 14:44 UTC, 57.50N-2.40W, we head northwest. At 15:52 UTC we shoot the net for haul 7 on a red-green layer above the bottom. The catch consists of 95 kg of haddock, sprat and whiting. There are also very small Norway pouts in the catch. It is plausible that the vast majority escaped through the large meshes in the front net.

- Trek 7 is again a mixture, this time of sprat, whiting, haddock and very small Norway pout.

- Several specimens of the Northern squid (Loligo forbesi) are caught in Trek 7.

- The suction cups on the middle part of the tentacle of the Northern squid are of equal size. This characterizes it from the common squid (Loligo vulgaris).

- Small specimens of Norway pout (and two small haddocks). Although they were not dominant in the catch in terms of weight, the echo recordings can be attributed to them.

At 18:21 UTC we are heading west again. After this we turn at 57.58N-3.25W on the last transect in a southwesterly direction. We end the day at 21:32 UTC at 57.49N-3.12W, deep in the Moray Firth. At night we sail to the starting point of the next transect at 57.52N-2.03W.

Friday 26 June 2020

Even later ligt er 3 ton kever in de last.

We start in eastern direction in the morning of Friday, June 26 at 2:59 UTC. It is still sunny. The wind has increased slightly (SE 3-4). At 5:30 UTC we see dark red schools on the bottom. Surely this is herring ?! We shoot the net (haul 4). A little later there is 2 tons of Norway pout in the hold.

In the research area of the Tridens - the area to the east of Scotland - swims mainly the somewhat smaller herring of 3 to 4 years old. North of the Tridens area, swims the larger sized herring (up to 12 years old). That area is examined every year by the research vessel of Scotland, the Scotia. The last strong year class of herring was in 2013. We will now notice this in our research area. This situation is reminiscent of the years 1995-1997, when - as now - very little herring grew up for a number of years in a row. At that time we caught a lot of Norway pout as well. It appears that Norway pout fills in the empty space left by the herring.

Trek 4, 26 juni 2020, 58.22N-1.40E, 2000 kg kever  -  Haul 4, 26 June 2020, 58.22N-1.40E, 2000 kg Norway pout .

- During hauling of haul 4, the codend floats behind the vessel.
- The catch of haul 4 in the hold: 2000kg of Norway pout.

- Also in the catch of haul 4: a monkfish, two cushion stars (Hippasteria phrygiana), common sea stars, a sea mouse (Aphrodita aculeata), a hagfish, a sea anemony (Bolocera tuediae) and sea urchins (green sea urchin, Psammechinus miliaris).

- A monkfish (Lophius piscatorius) and in the foreground to the right a sea mouse (Aphrodita aculeata).

After reaching the end of the transect (9:14 UTC, 58.22-2.00E) we turn south to the next transect at 58.07N-2.00E. At 10:47 UTC we head west. Soon we see large schools ("pillars") and set out for haul 5. During fishing we already see that the schools are suspiciously easy to catch. A possible explanation is that the schools consist of small fish: they do not swim very fast and are therefore not fast enough to dodge the net. Our suspicion is correct. The catch consists of very small Norway pout and haddock and 60 kg of larger haddock (and whiting).

Trek 5, 26 juni 2020, 58.07N-1.50E, 135 kever, schelvis (kabeljauw).  -  Haul 5, 26 June 2020, 58.07N-1.50E, 135 Norway pout, haddock (cod).

- The catch of haul 5 on the conveyor belt. Although a larger part of the catch consists of large Haddock, the schools shown on the echogram almost certainly come from the small fish (Norway pout and haddock). After being scooped up by the net, the vast majority of small fish escapes through the large meshes in the front net.

- This is not a picture of the wallpaper of the messroom...

- ...the fish (young Norway pout and haddock) stick to the plastic flap that is fixed where the catch falls on the sorting belt via the conveyor belt.

- Once again the broadtail shortfin squid (top) and the lesser flying squid (bottom), two species that are very similar. The latter has a shorter and wider mantle.

-  Among the young Norway pout and haddock are also a few dozen young cods.
