On Wednesday 18 July 2018 at 20:58 UTC we stop for the night at 54.17N-0.45E. Thursday 19 July 2018 we continue the survey from this position at 2:58 UTC in western direction. At 5:41 at 54.17N-0.07W we arrive at the end of the transect, turn southeast and start at 8:28 UTC at 53.47N-0.21E on our last transect in eastern direction. No fishing today. We carry out two CTD downcasts (no 37 and 38) and reach the end of the transect at 53.47N-2.00E at 14:16 UTC. From this position we set course towards the port of Scheveningen where we arrive at 20 July 4:00 UTC.

Wijting in een dikke laag plankton/Whiting amidst a thick plankton layer

After reaching the western end of the 55.16N transect at 0.18W at 17:00 UTC, we turn to the southeast to the start of the next transect at 54.46N-0.50W. Just before arriving at that position we see little schools above the bottom and about 20m under the sea surface.. We shoot the net for haul 21 at 20:00 UTC.

- The net is being hauled for haul 21 at dusk.

Trek 21, 17 juli 2018, 54.48N-0.53W, 16.8kg wijting(70%) en sprot(30%). - Haul 21, 17 July 2018, 54.48N-0.53W, 16.8kg whiting(70%) and sprat(30%).
Most likely are the reddish schools sprat, whereas the green "dots" can be allocated to whiting.

- In addition to half a basket of whiting and sprat, the catch contains a blue jellyfish (Cyanea lamarckii) a lion's mane jelly (Cyanea capillata), a little weever (Echiichthys vipera), two small Norway pouts and six specimens of the krill species Meganyctiphanes norvegica.

The next morning, Wednesday 18 July 2018, we start at 3:00 UTC on the 54.46N transect in eastern direction. There is a layer of 10-40m plankton layer visible on the echogram, well above the bottom. At 6:54 UTC at 54.46N-0.21W we collect a sample with the WP2 plankton net. Although we cannot analyse the content immediately on board, a first look reveals that the sample contains a variety of - especially gelatinous - species.

- Quick view in the WP2 plankton sample from 54.46N-0.21W. In addition to arrow worms and copepods, the sample seems to content a lot of  (box)jelly-like species and salps (Salpida).
At 9:00 UTC we fish for small schools amidst the plankton layer. Actually we expected sprat and young herring but the catch consists of whiting.

Trek 22, 18 juli 2018, 54.45N-0.49O, 1250kg wijting. - Haul 22, 18 July 2018, 54.45N-0.49E, 1250kg whiting.

Bass Rock en dodemans duim/Bass Rock and dead man's finger

After a stay in Leith, we leave on Monday morning 16 July 2018 at 4:00 UTC. While sailing through the Firth of Forth we pass Bass Rock. This is a rocky island with a large bird seabird colony. It inhabits 140.000 pairs of Gannets (Morus bassanus) which is 10% of the worldwide population! The scientific name of this species is derived from from this rock. During the survey we see a lot of Gannets. They are attracted by the vessel when we fish, but we see them also frequently during sailing of transects. They fly in groups to and from Bass Rock.

Bass Rock
We zien weinig vis vandaag.
At 8:49 UTC 55.47N-1.39W we start on the next transect in eastern direction. We do not see much fish today. In the evening at 18:00 UTC we decide to give it a try and shoot the net for a few little schools at the bottom (haul 18). Unfortunately the density of schools is too low to find them back and again we do not hit one: haddock and whiting.

Trek 18, 16 juli 2018, 55.44N-0.43.72O, 47 kg schelvis (50%) en wijting(50%). - Haul 18, 16 Juli 2018, 55.44N-0.43.72E, 47kg haddock(50%) and whiting (50%).

The next morning UTC, tuesday 17 July 2018 at 5:30 UTC, in a nice and calm sea, we see large herring pillars on the echogram. Of course we shoot the net for those (haul 19, 55.16N-0.40E).

- Mate Jan Bakker with the catch of haul 19.
During the haul the bottomrope of the net must have touched the bottom. This is apparent from the bottom stuff which drop from the meshes during hauling. Old (already dead) clams of the species Quahog (Arctica islandica) are scattered on the deck. This species can reach an age of several hundreds of years. On most of the quahogs grows dead man's finger (Alcyonium digitatum), a soft coral species.

- Old shells of quahogs (Arctica islandica) dead man's finger (Alcyonium digitatum), in front left a cushion's sea star (Hippasteria phrygiana), at the back right a damaged Norway king krab (Lithodes maja).

After haul 19 we take a sample of the dense plankton layer above the bottom with the WP2 net.

- A little jellyfish (approximately 3cm) in the WP2 plankton sample after haul 19. Probably it is a small specimen of the hydro medusa Staurostoma mertensii.

At 12:00 UTC we carry out haul 20 on small schools that we do not see back on the trawl sonar. The catch is half a basket of haddock and whiting. We proceed to the western end of the transect.

Trek 20, 17 juli 2018, 55.17N-0.12W, 22kg schelvis(60%) en wijting(30%). - Haul 20, 17 July 2018, 55.17N-0.12W, 22kg haddock and whiting(30%).

- Catch of haul 20 (from left below clockwise): whiting, grey gurnard and haddock.

Zwem- spring- en draai haring/ Swim-, jump- and turn herring

On 11 July we start at 2:01 UTC at 56.58N-1.05E in eastern direction. As we anticipate a lack of time later in the survey we decide to keep sailing today without fishing. Also we skip the part of the transect between 56.46N-0.53W and 56.46N-2.08W. Om 11:32 UTC at 56.57N-1.59E we change course to south and one and an half  hour later we sail the 56.42N transect towards the west. We sail till 56.42N-0.49W. At night we set course to the start of the next transect.

The next day, thursday 12 July we depart at 3:04 UTC from 56.27N-0.30W in eastern direction. At 9:30 we spot some schools an shoot the net for haul 14. We do not manage to catch these schools. The catch consists of haddock, whiting and some young herring.

Trek 14, 12 juli, 56.28N-1.36O, 420kg schelvis (60%), wijting (30%) en haring (5%); tijdens het vissen is het niet gelukt om (een van) de scholen te vangen. - Haul 14, 12 July, 56.28N-1.36E, 420kg haddock (60%), whiting (30%) and herring (5%). During the haul we did not manage to catch (one of the) schools(s).

- The catch of haul 14 consists of haddock and whiting.

- In the catch of haul 14 was a Norway king crab (Lithodes maja). We released it alive.

Wat een schoonheid! - What a beauty!
At 15:25 UTC we reach the end of the transect at 56.71N-1.56W and turn to southwest. At the start of the next transect (17:35 UTC) we see many schools at the bottom (haul 16). Like the schools before, we are not able to catch them! We pick them up with the sonar and head for them. Next, we see them under the vessel on the echogram but they never end up in the net. Among the crew and the scientists we start to talk about "swim herring" (because they keep swimming away from the net), "jump herring" (because they repeatedly jump away) and "turn herring" (because we keep fishing in circles in our attempts to get them). It makes us crazy! From experience we know that it is sometimes difficult to catch schools in bright weather in the middle of the day, but it seems that even in the evening we are not successful. Catch: again haddock and whiting.

Trek 15, 12 juli 2018, 56.13N-1.26O, 71kg schelvis (65%) en wijting35%. - Haul 15, 12 July 2018, 56.13N-1.26E, 71kg haddock (65%) and whiting (35%).

- Two squids (Illex coindetii) in the catch of haul 15.

After haul 15, which took hours, we stop and pick up the work the next morning, Friday 13 July 2018 at 3:04 UTC in western direction. At 6:30 UTC we see again schools and try to catch them - now in the morning -, but like before we do not catch herring. Frankly: we start to doubt whether this is herring at all. It is a mystery.

This is why we think that the schools represent herring: we do not see that we actually "hit"a school on the trawl sonar; the schools seem to swim fast and that fits to herring.
This is why we think that it might not be herring: there is no herring in the catch. There's haddock and whiting in the net. These are demersal species and they may escape underneath the ground rope.

However: during fishing we already noticed that the fish tries to escape under the ground rope - normal behaviour for herring and many other species - and that is why we fish extremely close to the bottom. So close, that we actually caught a hagfish in haul 15. This is a species that lives buried in the mud! In haul 14 we caught a Norway king crab, which is also a species that live on the bottom. Hence, you would expect larger catches whatever species the schools consists of. The possibility for fish to escape underneath the ground rope is not the big.

We just don't know for sure. This is an example of a piece of uncertainty in fisheries research. Luckily it will have not much impact on the overall estimation of the herring stock in the whole area because compared to the amount of herring in the northern part of the area, these schools are minor.

Trek 16, 13 juli 2018, 56.12N-0.23O, 692 kg schelvis (80%) en wijting (20%). -  Haul 16, 13 Juli 2018, 56.12N-0.23E, 692 kg haddock (80%) and whiting (20%).

- The catch of haul 16: haddock mixed with some whiting and one(!) herring. We trawled for hours and were not able to catch one of the schools in the area. The schools seemed to escape the net.

Towards the end of the transect  in the evening (17:45 UTC) we shoot the net for a dense layer at the bottom. The catch consists of a few kg's of mixed species, but on the deck and in the meshes are cristal gobies: it is likely that the layer is made up of this species. Cristal gobies are too small to catch with our trawl. Before the haul we take a sample of the layer at 25m with the WP2 plankton net (small copepods). At 22:39 UTC we finish the transect at 56.16N-2.26W and set course to the port of Leith.

Trek 17, 13 juli, 56.16N-1.22W, enkele kg's gemengde soorten, waarschijnlijk niet representatief voor de laag - Haul 17, 13 July, 56.16N-1.22W, a few kg's of mixed species probably not representative for the layer.

The catch of haul 17: some grey gurnards, a dab, a squid (Loligo forbessii), a few sprats sprat and youngs. haddock
The next morning at 8:30 UTC we arrive at the port of Leith. The weather is calm and sunny.

Start derde week na een weekend in Aberdeen/Start third week after a stay in Aberdeen

After a weekend stay in Aberdeen Tridens departs port on Monday 9 July 2018 at 5:00 UTC, een hour later than planned due to heavy ship traffic. We set course to the start of the next transect at 57.27N-1.39W where the survey rebegins at 6:49 UTC. At *:00 UTC we stop to shoot the net for little schools above the bottom in Buchan Deep (haul 10): sprat, haddock and 10% herring.

At 17:30 we fish for small compact schools, right at the bottom (haul 11). This yields 8 tons of herring. The crew is happy because there are quiet a few good "maatjes herring" in the catch.

Trek 11, 9 juli 2018, 57.27N-1.03O, 9238kg haring. - Trek 11, 9 July 2018, 57.27N-1.03O, 9238kg herring.
Today the wind blow hard from NNW direction with a force of 5-6 beaufort. For the moment the nice summer weather is over.

We stoppen voor de nacht om 21:14 UTC op 57.27N-1.29O en starten op dit punt de volgende dag, dinsdag 10 juli 2018 om 2:08 UTC. We stop for the night at 21:14 at 57.27N-1.29E and start from this position the next day, Tuesday 10 July 2018 at 2:08 UTC.

Trek 12,  10 juli 2018, 57.27N-1.23O, een dichte laag aan de bodem, die vooral goed te zien is op de 38, 70 en 120 kHz. Op de 18 kHz is de laag niet te zien. - Haul 12, 10 July 2018, 57.27N-1.23E, a dense layer close above the bottom, which is in particular visible on the 38, 70 and 120 kHz frequencies. It's not visible on the 18 kHz.

De vangst: 76kg wijting(60%) en schelvis(30%) - Haul 12, while steaming over the layer before shooting, some schools appear.
- The catch consists of two baskets whiting and haddock: they belong to the small red schools. So what's that layer? To find this out, we take a sample with the WP2 plankton net. In the sample are a lot of copepods (Calanus) and arrow worms (Chaetognatha).

- Catch in haul 12: two baskets of whiting, haddock and some old herring from the previous haul.

- Taking a plankton sample with the WP2 plankton net, right after haul 12.
While approaching the western end of the transect at 17:30 UTC (half an hour before the world cup match between France and Belgium in the half finals) we see schools close to the surface and shoot the net for haul 13. The catch is nothing, except for very small sandeel (Ammodytes marinus) and sprot stuck in the meshes of the rear net.

- Haul 13, 10 July 2018, 57.13N-0.52W, trawl  in the first 30m  from the surface. Catch: some mackerel and haddock, some small sandeel (Ammodytes marinus) and sprat stuck in the meshes of the rear net.

During writing of this first blog, we are already two weeks at sea for the yearly survey for herring and sprat in the North Sea.

On Monday 25 June 2018, shortly after lunch, the Tridens left for Scapa Flow (Orkney) in order to calibrate the acoustic equipment. Departure took place this time from the port of Den Helder, because in Scheveningen there was no place for the vessel due to the finish of the Volvo ocean race.

- Port of departure Den Helder and the the location where the acoustic will be calibrated.

The Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) in Scapa Flow is tuesday in the evening. Because of the sunny and calme weather Dirk Burggraaf and Serdar Sakinan, our acoustic specialists, have lots of opportunity and time to prepare everything for the calibration.

For the calibration of a scientific echosounder a reference target - a metal sphere - is positioned in the sound beam of the the transducer. The target strength of the sphere at a given frequency is known. The sphere is held under the vessel by means of three or four rods (Tridens uses four rods). By extending and winding up the ropes the sphere is moved through a horizontal intersection of the beam. Thus the sensitivity of all sections in the transducer can be measured. From these measurements a correction factor is calculated which is applied in the software of the echosounder.

The calibration is started the next morning at sunrise, Wednesday 27 July. Just before the temperature and salinity are being measured as these affect the sound speed in water and hence the measurements for the calibration.

The sphere is being moved through an intersection of the sound beam. Per calibration of a single transducer approximately 400 measurements are being taken. Per transducer we carry out three calibrations: after the first series of measurements a correction factor is applied; this is being repeated twice. Since we have six transducers in our drop keel, we have to execute 3x6=18 calibrations as a minimum. In addition we plan to do some experiments and we have to calibrate the multi beam echosounder which contains 22 transducers on its own. The outer beams make an angle of 90 degrees, resulting in a much larger area covered in comparison to a common transducer (7 degrees).

That wednesday 17 calibrations are being carried out. Thursday is reserved for the planned experiments and the multi beam transducers. In the evening the equipment is rapidly uninstalled after which course is set to Aberdeen. Arrival in port is shortly before lunch.
