Wijting in een dikke laag plankton/Whiting amidst a thick plankton layer

After reaching the western end of the 55.16N transect at 0.18W at 17:00 UTC, we turn to the southeast to the start of the next transect at 54.46N-0.50W. Just before arriving at that position we see little schools above the bottom and about 20m under the sea surface.. We shoot the net for haul 21 at 20:00 UTC.

- The net is being hauled for haul 21 at dusk.

Trek 21, 17 juli 2018, 54.48N-0.53W, 16.8kg wijting(70%) en sprot(30%). - Haul 21, 17 July 2018, 54.48N-0.53W, 16.8kg whiting(70%) and sprat(30%).
Most likely are the reddish schools sprat, whereas the green "dots" can be allocated to whiting.

- In addition to half a basket of whiting and sprat, the catch contains a blue jellyfish (Cyanea lamarckii) a lion's mane jelly (Cyanea capillata), a little weever (Echiichthys vipera), two small Norway pouts and six specimens of the krill species Meganyctiphanes norvegica.

The next morning, Wednesday 18 July 2018, we start at 3:00 UTC on the 54.46N transect in eastern direction. There is a layer of 10-40m plankton layer visible on the echogram, well above the bottom. At 6:54 UTC at 54.46N-0.21W we collect a sample with the WP2 plankton net. Although we cannot analyse the content immediately on board, a first look reveals that the sample contains a variety of - especially gelatinous - species.

- Quick view in the WP2 plankton sample from 54.46N-0.21W. In addition to arrow worms and copepods, the sample seems to content a lot of  (box)jelly-like species and salps (Salpida).
At 9:00 UTC we fish for small schools amidst the plankton layer. Actually we expected sprat and young herring but the catch consists of whiting.

Trek 22, 18 juli 2018, 54.45N-0.49O, 1250kg wijting. - Haul 22, 18 July 2018, 54.45N-0.49E, 1250kg whiting.

De vangst van trek 22, bestaat uit wijting. - The catch of haul 22 consists of whiting.
