We know from experience that there is little herring or other pelagic fish in the southern area. Moreover, the bottom is so hard, with so many differences in height, that it is actually not possible to fish there. Indeed, after our start on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at 4:11 UTC at 54.40N-1.01E, we hardly see any fish echoes on the echosounder on the last two transects. So there is also nothing to fish for.
At 7:33 UTC on 54.28N-2.00E we turn to WNW on the next transect and at 15:18 UTC on 54.23N-1.46E to ESE. At 20:00 UTC we take another CTD (no 34) on 53.27N-1.22E, after which the survey ends. We set course for Scheveningen.

- On Monday 13 July at 9:00 UTC we arrive in the port of Scheveningen. Below is an overview of the preliminary results.

Meganyctiphanes norvegica en eindelijk haring - Meganyctyphanes norvegica and finally herring

We are getting at the end of the survey. This morning (Saturday, July 11 2020) we started at 3:30 UTC at 55.26N-0.03E heading southwest. At 6.07 UTC we see schools that are very poorly visible on the screen of the 38 kHz. They are not visible at all at 18kHz, but the 120kHz and 200kHz show red schools. We don't often see these kinds of recordings during this research. It normally refers to schools consisting of fish without a swim bladder, such as mackerel and sandeel. In the firm expectation that it is mackerel, we shoot the net for haul 22. The catch itself is very disappointing: it consists of half a basket of jellyfish with a mix of fish. However - more exciting - on the deck are specimens of crustaceans of a few centimeters which too small to catch with this pelagic trawl. It is northern krill (Meganyctiphanes norvegica). Most likely, the observed schools consist of this species!

Trek 22, 11 juli 2020, 55.16N-0.38W, 23.7kg gemenge vangst (17kg gele haarkwal). Bovenste rij twee echogrammen: 38kHz(l), 18kHz(r). Onderste drie echogrammen: 70kHz(l), 120kHz(m) en 200kHz(r). - Haul 22, July 11, 2020, 55.16N-0.38W, 23.7kg mixed catch (17kg lion's mane jelly). This figure shows the echograms of five different frequencies. Top row two echograms: 38kHz (l), 18kHz (r). Bottom three echograms: 70kHz (l), 120kHz (m) and 200kHz (r).

- The school from haul 22 consist most likely of northern krill (Meganyctiphanes norvegica).

- The whole catch of haul 23, apart from the lion's mane jellyfish. The larger fish: some mackerels, haddock, grey gurnard and sprat. The smaller fish: small haddock, Norway pout, whiting, cod, sandeel, crystal goby. No fish: northern krill.

Rather unexpected a big school appears under the vessel. Before shooting the net, we first move from the transect to see if there are more of these schools around. That does not seem to be the case, meaning that if we want to collect a fish sample, we depend completely on this sole school. We look it up with the sonar and fish right towards it. Apart from the school, there are also small red/green "speckles" about five meter above the seafloor. On the netsonar, we see some of these going into the net during haul 23. Then the target school appears in the opening of the net. The echo seem to indicate that the quantity is higher than expected and we quickly start hauling. During hauling we see some herring as stickers in the larger meshes. Moments later, the filled codend lies behind the ship like a huge sausage. The catch - half herring, half whiting - is much larger than intended. Apart from haul 3 (young herring), this is the first haul with herring! The crew selects the herring that is not needed for the research: they are gilled and mixed with salt. They are then left for 24 hours in large barrels and will be put in buckets later this week.
The "speckles" (actually small schools) can probably be attributed to whiting.
Trek 23, 11 juli 2020, 55.02N-1.00W, 21317kg haring(52%) and wijting(47%) (sprot 0.3%). - Haul 23, July 11 2020, 55.02N-1.00W, 21317kg of herring(52%) and whiting(47%) (sprat 0.3%).

- The well filled codend of the net lies behind the vessel.

- The catch is brought aboard by repeatedly towing off a sack - called a "box".

- One of the boxes is lifted on board.

- The catch of haul 23 in the hold: herring and whiting.

At the sorting belt, the "maatjes" are selected and gilled. A right maatjesherring has not yet developed gonads.

- The gilled herring is mixed with salt by Jack Kraak and Gerco Kuijt in the so called "warrelbak".

- The lightly salted herring is put in large barrels. It is left to stand for 24 hours before the herring is transferred to buckets and frozen.

Een zeldzame waarneming: een kakende Urker! - A rare observation: a fisherman from (the former Isle of) Urk! (The people of Urk are known for their skills of fishing for flatfish with beam trawl; they are rarely spotted in pelagic fishery environments)

Een blije bemanning, na het haringkaken! - A happy crew after gilling of herring!

Om 20:05 UTC stoppen op 54.40N-0.58E voor de nacht. At 20:05 UTC we stop at 54.40N-0.58E for the night.

Haring - of schelvishaai? - Porbeagle or haddock shark?

-  The top map below shows the transects sailed  and the distribution of herring based on the data up to 9 July 2020. The bottom map shows the positions of the fishing spots and CTD stations.

- On the morning of Friday, July 10, 2020, we start at 3:20 UTC from 56.07N-0.13W to the west. At 5:39 UTC at 56.07N-0.57W we turn on the next transect, which runs from northwest to southeast. At 10:01 UTC we see high - not too dense - schools, that we target in haul 20. The catch consists of mackerel, haddock, whiting and half a basket of herring. With this catch, we cannot properly assess the compostion of the schools on the echogram. That's why we fish again (haul 21) when we see the same type of fish schools soon after.

- The catch of haul 20: a mixture of mackerel, haddock, whiting and even some herring.

- Hendrik-Jan Westerink measures and weighs the herring of haul 20.

Trek 21, 10 juli 2020, 55.53N-0.28E, 3720kg: 95% schelvis, 5% wijting en een haringhaai van ongeveer 150kg. - Haul 21, 10 July 2020, 55.53N-0.28E, 3720kg: 95% haddock, 5% whiting and a porbeagle of about 150kg.

During haul 21 we manage to catch some of the schools. When the net is hauled it turns out there is a large porbeagle in the codend. Due to its rough skin, the animal sticks halfway the codend which becomes twisted, making it difficult to get the animal out. There is about three and a half tons in the codend. We let an estimated one and a half tons out of the net in the hope that the shark will swim out and survives this adventure. Unfortunately, this plan fails. In the end, codend is lifted on board and the animal is taken out with great difficulty by the crew. Since he is still alive, he is immediately thrown overboard.
The catch of this haul consists of haddock. From this we can conclude that the observed schools on the echogram can most likely be attributed to that species.

- There is a large shark in haul 21. - The animal sticks with its rough skin halfway the codend, so that it twists.

- It is not an easy job to get the shark out of the codend.

Het is een haringhaai (Lamna nasus). Het dier leeft nog. - It is a porbeagle (Lamna nasus). The animal is still alive.

- After having released it alive, the crew looks in order to see if they can see it swim away.

- Crew member Wilko Klein with behind him the catch of haul 21 in the hold.

- The catch of haul 21 convinces us that the school consist mainly of haddock.

Thursday 9 July 2020

On Thursday, July 9, 2020, we resume the survey at 3:12 UTC at 56.22N-0.13W in eastern direction. At 4:50 am Benoit sees small schools on the bottom and decides to go fishing (haul 17). During shooting of the net, skipper Kinne Reichgeld sees large schools on the sonar. We decide to fish for those schools first. The expectations are high: will this finally be herring? The catch is a small three tons of haddock (8% mackerel). Immediately afterwards we fish close at the seafloor at the small schools. The catch is not much different from the previous haul. The difference is that there's some whiting with it this time ... and 53 herrings. We conclude that the composition of the bottom echo's is not really different from the big pelagic schools.

Trek 17, 9 juli 2020, 56.22N-0.18E, 2900kg schelvis met 8% makreel. - Haul 17, 9 July 2020, 56.22N-0.18E, 2900kg haddock with 8% mackerel

Trek 18, 9 juli 2020, 56.22N-0.18E, 1223kg schelvis met 10% makreel, 10% wijting (en 53 haringen). - Haul 17, 9 July 2020, 56.22N-0.18E, 1223kg haddock with 10% mackerel, 10% whiting (and 53 herrings).

- The crew at the rear deck during hauling of the trawl net.

- The codend with the catch is about to be raised.

- The catch of haul 17. The composition of haul 18 is pretty much the same: only a bit more whiting.

In the video you can see how the net of the net with the catch of haul 17 is lifted above the opened hatch to the hold. The codend is then opened and the catch falls down into the hold. In the video below you can see how the catch ends up in the load (haul 18).

De bemanning aan de koffie na trek 18. Van links naar rechts: Kinne Reichgeld, Gerco Kuijt, Tiemen Kramer en Jeroen Hollander. - The crew, coffee drinking after haul 18. From left to right: Kinne Reichgeld, Gerco Kuijt, Tiemen Kramer and Jeroen Hollander.

- Hendrik-Jan and André record the data of the 53 herrings that were also caught. Per cm length class, length, weight, sex and maturity of 5 specimens are successively registered.

- Finally, the two otoliths (auditory stones) of each herring are collected for age determination, later in the laboratory.

- André has removed the otoliths of a herring from the head and carefully puts them in the numbered compartment of the collection plate.

We continue to the east. At 13:05 UTC we arrive at 56.22N-1.42E at the end of the transect and turn southwest. At 15:04 we turn west on 56.07N-1.13E on the next transect. At 16:43 UTC we are fishing for the same kind of schools we saw in the morning. We assume that it will be haddock again. Well no. Although it also contains haddock and whiting, the catch mainly consists of mackerel. That is strange, because we did not see mackerel schools on the echogram - you can see this because this species gives stronger echoes on the echograms of the higher frequencies than on the lower frequencies. Also, we are convinced that we did not pick up the mackerel higher in the water column during hauling, as we saw the fish swimming in the net on the trawl sonar when it was still at the bottom. The mackerel may be so close to the ground that we cannot see it.

Between haul 18 and 19, the crew is shortening the sweeps of the trawl - those are the lines between the trawl doors and the net. This is necessary because we will end up in shallower water for the next three days.

- Fishing involves more than just shooting and hauling of the net. Here the crew makes an connection eye in sweeps of the fishing cable. From left to right: Arie-Jan Plug, Huig de Vreugd and Arie Krijgsman.

Trek 19, 9 juli 2020, 56.07N-0.39E, 1414kg makreel, 100kg schelvis, 14kg wijting en ... 3 haringen. - Haul 19, 9 July, 2020, 56.07N-0.39E, 1414kg mackerel, 100kg haddock, 14kg whiting and ... 3 herrings.

- The sea is dead calm. Occasionaly a guillemot with his chick swims along. Sorry for the poor quality of the photo (taken with a smartphone).

- The catch of haul19 in the hold. Because the mackerel is pressed together in the codend of the net, the rinsing water mixes with blood.

Kleine achtarm - Curled octopus

- Just still on the "Norwegian" transect we see schools - at 9:57 UTC. It is not much, but we fish for it. When you see little during a hydro-acoustic survey, you simply have to fish for little, because you need enough information to assign acoustic values to the echoes that you observe. The catch consists mainly of haddock. It also has some whiting through it and a few Norway pout. We've seen this before ...

- The catch of haul 15 falls into the hold.

- The catch of haul 15 consists mainly of haddock.

- Arie Krijgsman collects a basket of fish from the catch for sorting and measuring.

- The 56.37N transect crosses the so-called Devil's hole. This is a group of deep trenches carved by ice and melt water during one of the later ice ages: the depth around the Devil's Holes is about 70-80m, while the deepest hole is 230m (on the haul 14 echogram is one of these holes). After haul 15 we see many more similar schools. We do not fish for this under the assumption that the composition is comparable to the schools of this haul.

- We continue until the western end of the transect (22:50 UTC, 56.37N-0.42W). At night we sail to the northern start of the zigzag transect at 57.16N-1.45W. Here we start on Wednesday morning July 8 at 4:12 UTC. At 4:40 UTC we shoot the net on a layer with a red-green speckles. Fortunately, the echoes are high, because it is certainly not possible to fish right above the bottom (see echogram).

Trek 16, 8 juli 2020, 57.13N-1.38W, 44kg gele haarkwal, 5.3kg sprot, 1.7kg schelvis (zandspiering, kristalgrondel). - Haul 16, July 8, 2020, 57.13N-1.38W, 44kg Lion's mane jellyfish, 5.3kg sprat, 1.7kg haddock (sandeel, crystal goby, haring).

- Part of the catch of haul 16 on the sorting belt. To the left one of the 7 specimens of herring in the catch.

- In haul 16 is a specimen of a curled-, horned or lesser octopus (Eledone cirrhosa). It has been released alive.

Scheveningen, tussentijdse resultaten en herstart - Scheveningen, interim results and restart

- We arrive in Scheveningen on July 3, 2020 at 11:00 UTC. Three of the researchers immediately get into the waiting taxi van. The other two go home on their own.

Aankomst in Scheveningen. - Arrival in Scheveningen. On the starboard side is the coastguard ship, the "Barend Biesheuvel".

In het taxi busje. - In the taxi van.

- Below you can see the preliminary results of the first part of the survey. From top to bottom, the relative distribution of herring (HER), sprat (SPR) and Norway pout (NOP) is shown. See the June 30 blog episode for an explanation of the acoustic values. The bottom map shows the CTD stations and the fish hauls carried out. In summary: there is very little herring in the area that Tridens has investigated, as in other years there is sprat in the Moray Firth, but this time also in the adjacent north western part of the area in the North Sea. Norway pout is everywhere in the area.
