Haringhaai en kleine pietermannen/ Porbeagle and lesser weevers

On the 55.17N and 54.47N transects we keep seeing small schools at the bottom. On 17 and 18 July we have been fishing for these records with varying results. We suspect that the red schools - which appear relatively strong on the lower frequencies - escape from the net. The catches are small and consist always for a part of mackerel and/or some gadoids.

Trek 19 - 17 juli 7:30 UTC 55.17N-1.02W: 300 kg sprot/ Haul 19 - 17 July 7:30 UTC 55.17N-1.02W: 300 kg sprat

In the catch of haul 19 are two squids, Illex and Todaropsis. Here is a description of how these two species can be distinguised from European an/or Long vinned squid, Loligo and how to recognize the species.

Trek 20 - 17 juli 12:15 UTC 55.17N-0.12W: 120 kg makreel, kabeljauwachtigen en sprot/ Haul 20 - 17 July 12:15 UTC 55.17N-0.12W: 120 kg mackerel, gadoids and sprat

Hij bestaat uit makreel, whiting en sprot/ The catch of haul 20 on the conveyor belt from the hold. It consists of whiting, mackerel and sprat.
Trek 21 - 18 juli 7:30 UTC 54.47N-0.42E: 30 kg makreel, kabeljauwachtigen, sprot, jonge haring/ Haul 21 - 18 July 7:30 UTC 54.47N-0.42E: 30 kg mackerel, gadoids, sprot and young herring

Haul 22 on 18 July 13:10 UTC contained 2 tons of mackerel and a really large porpeagle. The shark fell into the hold and the crew hoisted the heavy animal to the fishing deck, where is was released. The animal (a she) was alive. Let's hope that she survived. It is not easy to put large incidental bycatches over board in an animal friendly way. We will try to develop a routine to do this in the best possible way in the future. It is much easier if an animal is smaller. On 23 March, in the blue whiting survey, we released a porbeagle alive by carrying is with three man up the stairs and drop it over the side.

De vangst an trek 21: makreel, wijting, schelvis, sprot en onvolwassen haring/ The catch of haul 21: mackerel, whiting, haddock, sprot and juvenile haring
Trek 22 - 18 juli 13:10 UTC 54.47N-0.13E: 2100 makreel en een haringhaai/ Haul 22 - 18 July 13:10 UTC 54.47N-0.13E: 2100 mackerel and a porbeagle

Een haringhaai in de vangst van trek 22. Het dier is met de makreel naar beneden in de last gevallen/ A porbeagle in the catch of haul 22. The animal fell down in the hold, together with the mackerel.

The shark is hoisted up with a rope around its tail...
It is not easy to put a heavy bycatch over board . For the future we intend to find a way to do this in a more animal friendly way.

Vermoedelijk is het een concentratie van fytoplankton/ Only the frequency of 333kHz shows the record so strong. It is probably a concentration of phytoplankton.
Haul 23 at 19 July 5:20 UTC 54.17N-0.17W is again directed to the same type of schools, but now the catch consists of a few baskets of herring en... lesser weever. This catch is sorted care, because these little fishes have poisoned spines on the back and the gill covers.

Trek 23 - 19 juli 5:20 UTC 54N-017W: 100kg kleine pietermannen en haring (jong en oud)/ Haul 23 - 19 July 5:20 UTC 54N-017W100 kg lesser weever and herring (adult and subadult)

De vangst van trek 23 bestaat uit kleine pieterman en haring/ The catch of haul 23 consists  lesser weever and herring
