Julikevers - Pine chafer beetles

From Thursday evening 8 July to Monday morning 12 July (11:30 UTC) the Tridens is lying on the quay in the harbour of Scheveningen. Everyone leaves for home on Friday morning 9 July. Bram does this by bike, through the dunes. When he cycles through Meijendel (between Scheveningen and Katwijk), he sees several pine chafer beetles (Polyphylla fullo). The July beetle is closely related to the cockchafer. The species lives underground for 4 years as grub, feeding on the foliage of pine trees and after it has pupated, comes above the ground for a few days to mate. The species is not very common in the Netherlands and you have to be lucky to come across them when they emerge. When you pick them up, they make a crunching sound. The males have large, shoehorn-shaped antennae.
