Slecht weer, kever en een slijmprik - Bad weather, Norway pout and a hagfish

Na trek 10 op dinsdag 5 juli laten we om 19:04 UTCde camera nog eens zakken om verspreide schooltjes hoog boven de bodem te onderzoeken. Op de camera lijken deze vooral uit plankton en kwallen te bestaan. We weten het niet zeker omdat grotere vis mogelijk wegzwemt voor de camera. Die avond varen we door in westelijke richting en stoppen om 21:11 voor een CTD en de nacht.

De volgende dag, woensdag 6 juli 2022, bereiken we het westelijke einde van het transect om 5:58 UTC en onderbreken het onderzoek om een bemanningslid af te zetten in Aberdeen. Om 9:55 UTC beginnen we aan het volgende transect met een CTD (nr 12) vanaf 57.19N-1.30W naar het oosten. Op dit transect zien we weinig en we vissen niet. Later op de dag neem de wind toe. Na CTD 14, om 21:40 stoppen we voor de nacht op 57.19N-2.01O aan het einde van het transect. In de nacht naar donderdag neemt de wind toe naar NW7-8 beaufort. After CTD 14, at 21:40 we stop for the night on 57.19N-2.01O at the end of the transect. In the night to Thursday the wind increases to NW7-8 Beaufort. The next morning we shoot the net on small red schools above the bottom (4.19 UTC, haul 11): juvenile Norway pout and 2 herrings.

Behalve kleine visjes (kever?), vleugelslakjes en andere plankton, zien we op de bodem een zwemmende slijmprik (Myxine glutinosa). in het slik op de bodem staan zeeveren (Pennatula phosphorea). - At CTD 14, we attached the camera to the CTD. Door de ruwe zee zien we veel minder dode Jan van Genten, maar ze zijn er nog wel! - Due to the rough sea we see much less dead gannets, but they are still there!

We varen verder naar het westen. Op de echogrammen van de hogere frequenties (333, 200, 120kHz) zien we grote zwermen. Aangezien we toch al een CTD moeten nemen, laten we deze zakken met de camera eraan bevestigd (9:36 UTC; CTD nr 17). Op de beelden is plankton te zien, vermoedelijk kleine vleugelslakjes.

Om 11:53 zien we weer kleine rode schooltjes boven de bodem en zetten hierop uit (trek 12). Dit keer bestaat de vangst uit 65% volwassen wijting en schelvis: geen kever te zien dit keer!

We sail further west. On the echograms of the higher frequencies (333, 200, 120kHz) we see large swarms. Since we need to carry out a CTD anyway, we lower it with the camera attached (9:36 UTC; CTD No 17). The images show plankton, presumably small pteropods.

At 11:53 we again see small red schools above the bottom and expand on them (draw 12). This time the catch consists of 65% adult whiting and haddock: no Norway pout in sight this time!
