Meer dode zeevogels - More dead seabirds

Op dinsdag 12 juli 2022, om 4:03 UTC begint de Tridens aan het nieuwe transect vanaf 56.25N-2.20W naar het oosten. Ook dit transect is betrekkelijk leeg. Om 8:31 UTC laten we de CTD met de camera zakken om te kijken op de bodem - we zagen namelijk wat echo's stijf op de grond - en zien enkele kevers zwemmen (56.25N-1.16W). Om 11:17 UTC verschijnen er toch wat kleine schooltjes, los van de grond. Hier vissen we op (trek 17). Tijdens de trek zien we hiervan niets terug op het echogram, maar er zit toch een halve vismand schelvis, sprot, wijting en grauwe poon in het net. Om12:13 UTC bereiken we het einde van het transect op 56.24N-0.32W en draaien richting NNW, naar het begin van het volgende transect op 56.33N-0.36W. Om 13:54 UTC varen we vanaf dit punt naar het oosten.

On Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at 4:03 UTC, Tridens begins the new transect from 56.25N-2.20W to the east. This transect is also relatively empty. At 8:31 UTC we lower the CTD with the camera to look at the bottom - we saw some echoes stiff on the ground - and see some Norway pout swimming (56.25N-1.16W). At 11:17 UTC some small schools appear, detached from the ground. This is where we fish (trawl 17). During the tow we do not see any of the echoes on the echogram, but nevertheless there is half a basket of haddock, sprat, whiting and gray gurnard in the net. At 12:13 UTC we reach the end of the transect at 56.24N-0.32W and turn towards NNW, to the start of the next transect at 56.33N-0.36W. At 13:54 UTC we sail east from this point.

Om 16:58 UTC besluiten we om te gaan vissen op kleine schooltjes (trek 18). Tijdens de trek zien we niets van deze schooltjes terug op het echogram. De vangst bestaat uit twee doornhaaitjes. Doornhaaien leven op de grond en zijn niet zichtbaar met een echolood op deze diepte. We hebben dus geen aanwijzing om wat voor soort het gaat. We nemen ons verlies en beginnen terug te varen naar het punt waar we het transect hebben onderbroken voor deze trek. Dan zien we tot onze verbazing 3 scholen onder het schip verschijnen. We zetten uit voor trek 19 (18:26 UTC). Na lang wachten verschijn er eindelijk een school onder het schip. Helaas zien we maar heel weinig hiervan terug op het scherm van de netsonar. In de hoop dat er genoeg in het net zit om een indicatie te krijgen om welke soort het gaat, halen we het net. De vangst bestaat uit een vismand wijting, maar er zitten behalve doornhaaitjes ook 14 sprotjes en een haring bij. We nemen toch maar aan dat de echo's afkomstige zijn van wijting.

At 16:58 UTC we decide to go fishing for small schools (draw 18). During the haul we do not see any of these schools back on the echogram. The catch consists of two spurdogs. Spiny sharks live on the ground and are not visible with an echo sounder at this range. So we have no indication of what species the schools consist. We take our loss and begin to sail back to the point where we interrupted the transect for this haul. Then to our surprise we see three schools appear under the ship. We shoot the net for haul 19 (18:26 UTC). After a long wait, a school finally appears under the ship. Unfortunately, we see very little of this on the net sonar screen. In the hope that there is enough in the net to get an indication of which species it is, we haul the net. The catch consists of a fishing basket of whiting, but apart from spurdogs, there are also 14 sprats and a herring in it. We assume that the echoes come from whiting.

Dode zeekoeten: slachtoffers van de vogelgriep. Tijdens trek 18 zien we 7 dode zeekoeten, 1 Jan van Gent en 1 Noordse stormvogel drijven, tijdens trek 19 nog eens 3 Jan van Genten. - Dead guillemots: victims of bird flu. During haul 18 we see 7 dead guillemots, 1 gannet and 1 fulmar floating, during migration 19 another 3 gannets.
