Haringpalen - Herring pillars

Het is zondagochtend 3:07 UTC, als we het transect naar het oosten vervolgen. In de loop van de ochtend wordt het iets ondieper en zoals verwacht, verschijnen er kleine rode schooltjes op de bodem. Onze aanname dat dit waarschijnlijk kever is, wordt bevestigd door de vangst van trek 10 (6:28 UTC).

It is 3:07 UTC on Sunday morning as we continue the transect eastwards. In the course of the morning it becomes a little shallower and as expected, small red schools appear on the bottom. Our assumption that this is likely to be a Norway pout is confirmed by the catch of haul 10 (6:28 UTC).

Veertien mijl naar het oosten, veranderen de echo aantekeningen in grote scholen. Bram neem aan dat dit weer schelvis is, net als op de locatie van trek 6 op het vorige transect, maar enkele bemanningsleden denken dat het misschien haring is. We nemen de proef op de som met trek 11: een mix van schelvis, makreel, wijting en jonge kever. De conclusie is dat de scholen voornamelijk bestaan uit jonge kever, maar doordat deze tijdens het vissen snel weer door de grote grote mazen van het voornet ontsnappen, kom je er maar weinig van tegen in de vangst.

Fourteen miles to the east, the echo recodings turn into large schools. Bram assumes this is again haddock, just like at the location of haul 6 on the previous transect, but some crew members think it might be herring. We put it to the test with haul 11: a mix of haddock, mackerel, whiting and young beetle. The conclusion is that the schools mainly consist of young Norway pout, but because these quickly escape through the large meshes of the frontnet during fishing, one will not encounter many of them in the catch.

Eenmaal op de sorteerband, blijken er ook veel kleine kevers in de vangst te zitten. Waarschijnlijk zijn de echo's op het echogram voornamelijk afkomstig van kever. - Once on the sorting belt, it appears that there are a lot of small Norway pout in the catch. Most likely the recordings from the echogram can be attributed to Norway pout.

Om 11:45 UTC op 57.57.90N-1.59.82E draaien we naar het oosten op het intertransect en varen, om tijd te winnen, op twee motoren op hoge snelheid naar het volgende transect (57.43N). Daar komen we aan om 13:14 UTC en draaien naar het westen. Na een kleine tien mijl verschijnt de ene school na de andere op het echogram: haringpalen. Tijdens het vissen, blijkt het erg lastig te zijn om ze daadwerkelijk in het net te krijgen. Na twee en een half uur vissen lukt het eindelijk om wat te vangen. Dat de vangst een mix van schelvis, wijting, makreel en haring blijkt te zijn, is niet zo vreemd. Om de hoog zwemmende haringscholen te pakken te krijgen, moeten we namelijk met de onderpees vlak boven de bodem vissen om te voorkomen dat de haring er onderdoor duikt: op jacht naar haring, vang je dus onvermijdelijk ook vis die vlak boven de bodem zwemt.

At 11:45 UTC at 57.57.90N-1.59.82E we turn east on the intertransect and, to save time, sail on two engines at high speed to the next transect (57.43N). We arrive there at 13:14 UTC and turn west. After about ten miles, one school after another appears on the echogram: herring pillars. While fishing, it turns out to be very difficult to actually get them into the net. After two and a half hours of fishing we finally manage to catch something. It is not surprising that the catch turns out to be a mix of haddock, mackerel and herring. To get hold of the high-swimming herring schools, we have to fish with the lower rope just above the bottom to prevent the herring from escaping under it: when hunting for herring, you inevitably also catch fish that swim just above the bottom.

Trek 12: de haring is afkomstig van de scholen in de water kolom. De schelvis komt van de bodem. Het is niet duidelijk waar we de makreel hebben opgepikt. - Haul 12: the herring origins from the schools in the water column. The haddock is from the bottom. Na trek 12, blijven we kleine schooltjes en "gespetter" aan de bodem zien tot ongeveer 1.00E. Op grond van de vangstinformatie van de trek 10, 11 en 12 gaan we er vanuit dat dit kever, schelvis en wijting is. Om 21:06, op 57.42.87N-0.30.56E stoppen we omdat het te donker wordt wordt het onderzoek en omdat men hier aan boord rust nodig heeft.

At 21:06, 57.42.87N-0.30.56E we stop because it is getting too dark to survey and because people need rest here on board.
