Duivelse kever - Devilish Norway pout

Dinsdag 13 juli om 6:23 UTC op 56.43N-2.00E beginnen we aan de tweede helft van de survey. We varen over de Duivelse gaten naar het westen. De verwachting is dat we weer grote, pelagische scholen zullen zien zoals op het transect ten noorden van ons (zie trek 15), maar dat gebeurt niet. Tijdens CTD opname nummer 23, verschijnt er een laag rode schooltjes op de bodem. We vissen hierop om 9:12 UTC tijdens trek 16. Zou de vangst weer uit schelvis bestaan of is het dit keer misschien haring? Na een uur vissen ligt het antwoord in de last: jonge kever.

Tuesday 13 July at 6:23 UTC at 56.43N-2.00E we start with the second half of the survey. We sail west over the Devil's Holes. We expect to see large, pelagic shoals like on the transect north of us (see haul 15), but that is not happening. During CTD recording 23, a layer of red schools appears on the bottom. We fish for this at 9:12 UTC for haul 16. Will the catch be haddock again or might it be herring this time? After an hour of fishing, the answer lies in the hold: juvenile Norway pout.

De scholen aan de rechterkant van het echogram lijken groter doordat het schip daar stil lag tijdens een CTD-opname. - Haul 16, 13 July 2021, 56.42.91N-1.09.78E, 773kg Norway pout. The shoals at the right of the echogram seem larger because the was not moving duringg a CTD downcast.

Drie jonge slanke pijlinktvissen (Illex coindetii) en een noordse pijlinktvis (Loligo forbesii). - Three young shortfin squid and a veined longfin squid (Loligo forbesii).

Er zitten honderden medusen in de vangst. Waarschijnlijk het meduse-stadium van Eutonina indicans of Tima bairdii. Afgaande of het formaat (4-7cm), is het waarschijnlijk Tima. - In the catch are hundreds of medusa. This is probably the medusa-stage of the hydropolyp Eutonina indicans of Tima bairdii. Given the size of the individuals (4-7cm), the latter seems more likely.

Op de rest van het transect zien we nauwelijks nog echo aantekeningen van vis. Om 17:48 UTC bereiken we het westelijke uiteinde van het transect op 56.43.13N-048.45W. Hier stoppen we voor de nacht. Morgen zullen we starten op het volgende transect.
