Schelvis en wijting - Haddock and whiting

Op dinsdag 9 juli, beginnen we om 2:37 UTC. We varen naar het oosten tot 2:44 UTC, 56.50.59N-2.00.09O, waar we naar het zuiden draaien. Om 5:26 UTC op 56.36.60N-1.59.75O draaien we naar het westen een nieuw transect op. De lichte rode schooltjes, enkele meters boven de bodem, die we eigelijk al de hele reis zien en waarvan we weten dat het schelvis en/of wijting is, worden hier iets groter en talrijker. Hoewel het doel van deze bestandsopname haring en sprot is, vissen we er toch op. We willen graag zeker weten dat het geen haring is. Daarnaast willen we onderzoeken of we deze jaarlijkse survey op de langere termijn ook kunnen gebruiken om schattingen te maken van kabeljauwachtigen, zoals schelvis, wijting en kever. We onderbreken het transect om 5:47 UTC voor trek 18 op deze echo's. De vangst bestaat uit schelvis (70%), wijting (20%) en makreel (10%). De makreel in de last is springlevend: een teken dat we die pas op het allerlaatste moment, aan aan de oppervlakte hebben opgepikt bij het halen. Dat klopt ook met onze eerdere waarneming dat er in alle oppervlakte trekken die we hebben gedaan deze reis, altijd wel makreel te vinden was.

On Tuesday, July 9, we start at 2:37 UTC. We sail east until 2:44 UTC, 56.50.59N-2.00.09E, where we turn south. At 5:26 UTC at 56.36.60N-1.59.75E we turn west onto a new transect. The light red schools, a few meters above the bottom, which we have actually been seeing throughout the trip and which we know are haddock and/or whiting, are becoming slightly larger and more numerous here. Although the purpose of this stock recording is herring and sprat, we still fish for them. We would like to be sure it is not herring. We also want to investigate whether we can use this annual survey in the longer term to also make estimates of cod-like species, such as haddock, whiting and beetle. We interrupt the transect at 5:47 UTC for haul 18 on these echoes. The catch consists of haddock (70%), whiting (20%) and mackerel (10%). The mackerel in the hold is alive and well: a sign that we only picked it up at the very last moment, on the surface, during hauling. This also agrees with our previous observation that in all surface hauls we did this trip, mackerel was always to be found.

Na trek 18 varen we westwaarts naar het einde van het transect op 56.35.67N-0.40.83W (16:32 UTC). Vanaf dat punt moeten we vijf uur varen naar het begin van het volgende transect. We varen er rustig naartoe om er de volgende ochtend aan te beginnen.
