Oppervlakte haring - Surface herring

 
Op maandag 1 juli vertrekt de Tridens uit Aberdeen voor het begin van de tweede week. Om 8:00 UTC beginnen we op 57.49N-1.56W, op de grens van de Moray Firth in oostelijke richting. Na een uur, om 9:02 UTC zetten we het net uit voor schooltjes aan de grond. De vangst bestaat uit haring.

On Monday 1 July the Tridens leaves Aberdeen for the start of the second week. We are starting at 8:00 UTC at 57.49N-1.56W, on the border of the Moray Firth heading east. After an hour, at 9:02 UTC, we set the net for schools on the bottom. The catch consists of herring.

We varen verder op het 57.50N-transect naar het oosten. Om 16:45 UTC zien we een flinke haring paal op het echogram, ongeveer 30m boven de bodem. Dergelijke grote scholen die los boven de bodem zwemmen, zijn vaak moeilijk terug te vinden als je er eenmaal overheen bent gevaren, omdat ze zich snel verplaatsen. En als je ze dan eenmaal gevonden hebt, ontsnappen ze vaak aan het net. Onze ervaring is dat het midden op de dag soms onmogelijk is om ze te pakken te krijgen. Gelukkig loopt het al tegen de avond en we zien op de sonar dat er nog veel meer scholen om ons heen zitten. We zetten uit voor trek 10. De eerste school duikt onder het net door. De tweede en derde school ontsnappen over het net heen. De vierde school gaat wel in het net. Tegen de tijd dat de vangst - haring! - in de last ligt en we verder varen naar het oosten, zijn we vier uur verder. Na de varen we verder op het transect. We stoppen om 21:43 UTC we voor de nacht.

We continue on the 57.50N transect to the east. At 16:45 UTC we see a large herring pillar on the echogram, about 30m above the bottom. Such large schools that swim loosely above the bottom are often difficult to find once you have sailed over them, because they move quickly. And once you find them, they often escape the net. Our experience is that it is sometimes impossible to get hold of them in the middle of the day. Fortunately, it is already evening and we see on the sonar that there are many more schools around us. We set out for haul 10. The first school ducks under the net. The second and third schools escape over the net. The fourth school does go into the net. By the time the catch - herring! - is in the hold and we sail further east, four hours have passed. After the sail we continue on the transect. We stop at 21:43 UTC for the night.

Op dinsdag 2 juli starten we in de schemering om 2:33 UTC. Om 7:10 UTC zien we kleine scholen vlak onder het oppervlak. We vissen hierop (trek 11). De vangst bestaat uit Haring met ongeveer 20% makreel. Om 9:54 UTC op 57.50N-2.00E varen we zuidwaarts naar het volgende transect. Om 11:16 UTC beginnen we op 57.36N-2.00E te varen naar het westen. 

On Tuesday, July 2, we start at dawn at 2:33 UTC. At 7:10 UTC we see small schools just below the surface. We fish for this (haul 11). The catch consists of Herring with approximately 20% mackerel. At 9:54 UTC at 57.50N-2.00E we sail south to the next transect. At 11:16 UTC we start sailing west at 57.36N-2.00E.

In tegenstelling tot andere jaren zit de haring veel vaker aan het oppervlak dan op de bodem. Mogelijk wordt dit veroorzaakt doordat het paaiseizoen dit jaar later is. Het lijkt erop dat de haring nog bezig is om naar de paaigebieden te zwemmen. Dit soort scholen zijn vaak nog aan het eten, om genoeg energie op te doen voor het ontwikkelen van de hommen en kuiten. Vreemd genoeg zijn de magen die we opensnijden meestal leeg. Dit mysterie is dus nog niet opgelost!

Ruim twee uur nadat we op het nieuwe transect zijn begonnen, zien we weer haringscholen aan het oppervlak (13:30 UTC, trek 12).

In contrast to other years, the herring are much more often on the surface than on the bottom. This may be due to the fact that the spawning season is later this year. It seems that the herring are still busy swimming to the spawning areas. These types of schools are often still eating, to gain enough energy to develop their calves and calves. Strangely enough, the stomachs we cut open are usually empty. So this mystery has not been solved yet!

More than two hours after we started on the new transect, we see schools of herring on the surface again (13:30 UTC, haul 12).

Na trek 12 varen we verder tot 21:02 op 57.35N-0.20O, waar we stoppen, om de volgende ochtend, op woensdag 3 juli om 2:46UTC weer verder te varen. We vissen om 4:51 UTC op grote scholen die een flink stuk boven de bodem zwemmen. Dit keer gaan ze er veel gemakkelijker in. We vangen per ongeluk veel meer dan we nodig hebben. De bemanning maakt van de nood een deugd en maakt er maatjes haring van.

De rest van de dag zien we geen haring meer. Dat is maar goed ook, wat tijdens de laatste trek is het net beschadigd. Nu heeft de bemanning mooi de tijd om het te repareren.

Om 11:03 UTC komen we aan op het westelijke uiteinde van het transect, op 57.35N-1.46W, vlak voor de Schotse kust. We zetten koers naar het zuiden en starten om 12:54 UTC op 57.20N-1.30W aan het volgende transect naar het oosten. Om 20:59, 57.20N-0:51O stoppen we voor de nacht.

After haul 12 we continue sailing until 21:02 at 57.35N-0.20E, where we stop and continue sailing the next morning, Wednesday 3 July at 2:46UTC. We fish at 4:51 UTC for large schools swimming well above the bottom. This time they go into the net much easier. We accidentally catch way more than we need. The crew turns necessity into a virtue and turn the surplus into "maatjes" of herring.

We don't see any more herring for the rest of the day. That's a good thing, the net was damaged during the last tow. Now the crew has plenty of time to repair it.

At 11:03 UTC we arrive at the western end of the transect, at 57.35N-1.46W, just off the Scottish coast. We set course south and start at 12:54 UTC at 57.20N-1.30W on the next transect to the east. At 20:59, 57.20N-0:51O we stop for the night.

Op donderdag 4 juli hervatten we ons transect naar het oosten. Helaas is de wind inmiddels toegenomen naar W6 tot 8 Beaufort. Dit weerhoudt ons er niet van om twee keer te vissen op oppervlakte scholen haring: trek 14, 4:45 UTC en trek 15 16:18 UTC. Hoewel we zeker weten dat de scholen die we zien, uit haring bestaan - makreel vormt niet dichte, rode scholen omdat ze geen zwemblaas hebben -, bestaat het grootste deel van de vangst uit makreel. Het vreemde is ook, dat we veel scholen het net zien ingaan op de netsonar die we niet terug zien op de sensoren achter in het net. Vermoedelijk ontsnapt veel haring door de grote mazen in het voornet. Voor het onderzoek is dit overigens niet erg: we vangen genoeg voor de benodigde monsters.

We gebruiken tijdens deze survey een nieuw net voor de oppervlakte-trekken, het zogenaamde "Flex Net". Dit net vis veel prettiger aan de oppervlakte en in ondiep water, dan het "M2000-Net" dat we normaal gesproken gebruiken. De komende tijd zullen we meer ervaring opdoen met dit net en hopelijk komen we erachter waardoor die haring in de oppervlakte-trekken lijkt te ontsnappen.

On Thursday, July 4, we resume our transect to the east. Unfortunately the wind has now increased to W6-8 Beaufort. This does not prevent us from fishing for surface schools of herring twice: haul 14, 4:45 UTC and haul 15, 4:18 UTC. Although we know for sure that the schools we see are herring - mackerel do not form dense, red schools because they do not have a swim bladder - the majority of the catch is mackerel. The strange thing is that we see many schools entering the net based on the net sonar that we do not see reflected on the sensors at the back of the net. Presumably a lot of herring escapes due to the large meshes in the front net. By the way: this is not a problem for the research: we still catch enough for our samples.

During this survey we use a new net for surface tracing, the so-called "Flex Net". This net is much more pleasant to fish on the surface and in shallow water than the "M2000-Net" that we normally use. In the near future we will gain more experience with this net and hopefully we will find out what causes those herring to escape into the surface features.

We maken slechts langzaam vorderingen tijdens dit transect, omdat we tegen de wind in varen. Om te voorkomen dat de kwaliteit van de akoestische waarnemingen te laag wordt, varen we langzamer. Gewoonlijk varen we ongeveer 10 knopen. Op donderdag en vrijdag ligt de snelheid tussen de 5 en 7 knopen. Op deze donderdag stoppen we om 21:03 UTC op 57.05.71N-0.36.65O.

We are making slow progress during this transect as we are sailing against the wind. To prevent the quality of the acoustic observations from becoming too low, we sail more slowly. We usually sail at about 10 knots. On Thursday and Friday the speed is between 5 and 7 knots. On this Thursday we stop at 21:03 UTC at 57.05.71N-0.36.65O.
