Makreel in een vlakke zee - Mackerel in a flat sea

Op maandagochtend 15 juli om 4:00 verlaten we de haven van Sunderland. We varen naar het westelijk uiteinde van het transect dat we voor het weekeinde hebben verlaten. We varen dit transect nu in tegenovergestelde richting (WNW), naar het punt waar we het onderbroken hebben. Na trek 25 (7:30 UTC) op scholen tussen de 35 en 60m diepte, verspreid over de waterkolom, komen we aan op dit punt om 14:29 UTC en varen naar het noorden om daar een stuk transect te varen tussen 55.42N-1.12O en 55.42N-2.30O. Dit doen we om tijd te sparen: dan hebben we dat stukje transect alvast gedaan, zonder dat we daglicht-tijd verliezen met stomen naar het volgende transect. We komen aan op dat punt om 21:30 (CTD 32). In de nacht varen we NW naar het begin van het noordelijke transect op 56.33N-1.26O.

Trek 25 verloopt raar: we willen een monster verzamelen van de scholen die we zien op het echogram, maar bij het uitzetten van het net, zien we meteen onder het wateroppervlak vis het net ingaan. Tijdens de trek over de bodem zien we ook wat vis op de netsonar. We vermoeden dat dit wijting en schelvis is. Tot onze verbazing, zit het net vol met makreel. Dat moet de vis zijn geweest die we aan het oppervlak in het net zagen gaan. De wijting en schelvis die tussen de makreel zit, hebben we naar alle waarschijnlijkheid lager in de waterkolom gevangen. In de kleine maxen van het achternet en verspreid op het achterdek vindt de bemanning veel kristalgrondels: uit ervaring weten we dat dit afkomstig is van de blauwige laag vlak boven de bodem.

On Monday morning, July 15, at 4:00 am we leave the port of Sunderland. We sail to the western end of the transect we left for the weekend. We now sail this transect in the opposite direction (WNW), to the point where we interrupted it. After haul 25 (7:30 UTC) at shoals between 35 and 60m depth, spread over the water column, we arrive at this point at 14:29 UTC and sail north to sail a stretch of transect between 55.42N- 1.12O and 55.42N-2.30O. We do this to save time so that we have already done that part of the transect not loosing daylight time sailing north off transect. We arrive at that point at 9:30 PM (CTD 32). During the night we sail NW to the start of the northern transect at 56.33N-1.26E.

Haul 25 is strange: we want to collect a sample of the schools we see on the echosounder, but when we shoot the net, we immediately see fish entering the net just below the surface. During the haul over the bottom we also see some fish on the net sonar. We suspect this is whiting and haddock. To our surprise, the net is full of mackerel. That must have been the fish we saw going into the net at the surface. We most likely caught the whiting and haddock found among the mackerel, lower in the water column. In the small meshess of the rear net and spread on the aft deck the crew finds many crystal gobies: from experience we know that this comes from the bluish layer just above the bottom.

De blauwe laag vlak boven de bodem op het echogram, is afkomstig van kristalgrondels (Crystallogobius linearis). We treffen ze niet aan in de last en de sorteerband, maar wel in de kleine mazen van het achternet. Op het achterdek liggen er ook veel. - The blue layer just above the bottom on the echogram comes from crystal gobies (Crystallogobius linearis).
