Haai op een brancard - Shark on a stretcher

Op dinsdag 16 juli, starten we om 2:34 UTC op 56.13.26N-1.27.36O op het noordelijkste transect in de Duitse bocht oostelijke richting. Om 4:21 UTC vissen we op kleine schooltjes vlak boven de bodem (trek 26). Bij het halen ziet de bemanning dat er een grote haai in de kuil zit. Voorzichtig laten ze vangst (schelvis en wijting) uit de afgesnoerde zak van de kuil lopen om te voorkomen dat de haai gewond raakt. Op het moment dat de haai - het is een haring haai - uit de zak valt slaat deze wilt om zich heen en de bemanning kan niet voorkomen dat hij in de last terecht komt. Na veel moeite weten ze hem uit de last te trekken, op onze haaienbrancard te trekken en vrij te laten.

The moment the shark - it is a porbeagle - falls out of the bag, it throws itself around and the crew cannot prevent it from ending up in the hold. After a lot of effort they manage to pull him out of the load, onto our shark stretcher and release him.

Vlak na de trek met de haringhaai, verschijnen er grote scholen op het echogram. Hoewel we vermoeden dat het ook weer schelvis en wijting is, moeten we er wel op vissen (7:12 UTC, trek 27). Als dit namelijk toch haring of sprot zou zijn en wij wijzen deze echo's ten onrechte toe aan schelvis en wijting, zou dit leiden tot een onderschatting van de haring en sprot bestanden. De vangst bestaat - zoals verwcht uit schelvis en wijting. We varen verder naar het oostelijke uiteinde van dit transect op 56.13.60N-6.00.07O. We komen hier aan om 20:04 UTC en onderbreken het onderzoek om 'snachts 30 mijl naar het zuiden naar het begin van het volgende transect te varen.

Shortly after the tow with the porbeagle shark, large schools appear on the echogram. Although we suspect it is also haddock and whiting, we have to fish for it (7:12 UTC, haul 27). If this were herring or sprat and we incorrectly assigned these echo's to haddock and whiting, this would lead to an underestimate of the herring and sprat stocks. The catch consists - as expected - of haddock and whiting. We continue to the eastern end of this transect at 56.13.60N-6.00.07E. We arrive here at 20:04 UTC and interrupt the survey to sail 30 miles south during the night to the start of the next transect.
