Moray Firth

Op Zaterdag 27 juni beginnen we om 3:16 UTC vanaf de positie waar we de dag ervoor zijn gestopt (58.07N-0.57W) in westelijke richting, naar de Moray Firth. Om 4:31 UTC vissen we op kleine, groen-rode "spikkels" op ongeveer 20m boven de bodem. De vangst is een mengsel van schelvis, wijting, makreel, kever, sprot en haring. Aangezien de kever, de sprot en haring veel kleiner zijn, nemen we aan dat de meeste exemplaren van deze soorten door de grote mazen van het voornet zijn ontsnapt. Waarschijnlijk kunnen de waargenomen echo's voornamelijk aan deze drie soorten worden toegeschreven.

On Saturday, June 27, we start at 3:16 UTC from where we left off the day before (58.07N-0.57W) in western direction towards the Moray Firth. At 4:31 UTC we fish for small, green-red "speckles" about 20m above the bottom. The catch is a mixture of haddock, whiting, mackerel, Norway pout, sprat and herring. Since the Norway pout, sprat and herring are much smaller, we assume that most specimens of these species have escaped through the large meshes of the front net. Probably, the observed echoes can mainly be attributed to these three species.

Een kromme pijlinktvis (Todaropsis eblanae). Dit is een volwassen mannetje. Dat kun je zien aan de twee onderste armen die zijn aangepast om sperma op te slaan en over te brengen naar het vrouwtje. Zo'n arm heet een "hectocotylus". - A lesser flying squid (Todaropsis eblanae). This is an adult male. You can tell by the two lower arms that are adapted to store and transfer sperm to the female. Such an arm is called a "hectocotylus".

Om 10:01 UTC op 58.07N-2.28W komen we op het buitenste transect in de Moray Firth en varen in zuidwestelijke richting; vanaf 12:31 UTC, 57.46N-2.07W, varen we langs de kust naar het westen en om 14:44 UTC, 57.50N-2.40W, zetten we koers naar het noordwesten. Om 15:52 UTC zetten we uit voor trek 7 op een roodgroene laag boven de bodem. De vangst bestaat uit 95kg schelvis, sprot en wijting. Er zitten ook heel kleine kevers in de vangst. Het is aannemelijk dat het overgrote deel door de grote mazen in het voornet is ontsnapt.

At 10:01 UTC at 58.07N-2.28W we arrive at the outer transect in the Moray Firth and sail in a southwesterly direction; from 12:31 UTC, 57.46N-2.07W, we sail west along the coast and at 14:44 UTC, 57.50N-2.40W, we head northwest. At 15:52 UTC we shoot the net for haul 7 on a red-green layer above the bottom. The catch consists of 95 kg of haddock, sprat and whiting. There are also very small Norway pouts in the catch. It is plausible that the vast majority escaped through the large meshes in the front net.

Trek 7, 27 juni 2020, 58.00N-2.52W, 60kg schelvis, 30kg sprot, 5kg wijting (en 200g kever!). - Haul 7, 27 June 2020, 58.00N-2.52W, 60kg haddock, 30kg sprat, 5kg whiting (en 200g Norway pout!).

Trek 7 is weer een mengsel, dit keer van sprot, wijting, schelvis en heel kleine kever. - Trek 7 is again a mixture, this time of sprat, whiting, haddock and very small Norway pout.

In de vangst van trek 7 bevinden zich meerdere exemplaren van de Noordse pijlinktvis (Loligo forbesi). - Several specimens of the Northern squid (Loligo forbesi) are caught in Trek 7.

De zuignappen op het middelste deel van de tentakel van de Noordse pijlinktvis zijn van gelijke grootte. Dit kenmerkt onderscheid hem van de gewone pijlinktvis (Loligo vulgaris). - The suction cups on the middle part of the tentacle of the Northern squid are of equal size. This characterizes it from the common squid (Loligo vulgaris).

Kleine exemplaren van kever (en twee schelvisjes). Hoewel ze kwa gewicht niet dominant zijn in de vangst, kunnen de echo's wel aan hen worden toegeschreven. - Small specimens of Norway pout (and two small haddocks). Although they were not dominant in the catch in terms of weight, the echo recordings can be attributed to them.

Om 18:21 UTC zetten we weer koers naar het westen. Hierna draaien we op 57.58N-3.25W het laatste transect in zuidwestelijke richting. We eindigen de dag om 21:32 UTC op 57.49N-3.12W, diep in de Moray Firth. In de nacht varen we naar het beginpunt van het volgende transect op 57.52N-2.03W.

At 18:21 UTC we are heading west again. After this we turn at 57.58N-3.25W on the last transect in a southwesterly direction. We end the day at 21:32 UTC at 57.49N-3.12W, deep in the Moray Firth. At night we sail to the starting point of the next transect at 57.52N-2.03W.
