Op donderdag 25 juni 2020 starten we de survey om 3:14 UTC op 58.26N-2.51W en varen een stukje diagonal transect aan de buitenkant van de Moray Firth naar het zuidoosten. Op 58.22N-2.46W draaien we naar het oosten en beginnen aan het eerste transect. Om 4:48 UTC is het eerste CTD station op 58.22N-2.26W. Om 5:27 UTC zien we de eerste echo-aantekeningen. Het zijn kleine rode schooltjes vlak boven de bodem. Dat moet wel haring zijn, denken we, en zetten uit voor trek 1. Het is lastig vissen, want de bodem is rotsig. De vangst bestaat uit een mengsel van 160kg wijting, schelvis en grauwe poon. Oh, er zit ook één haring bij.

At 58.22N-2.46W we turn east and begin the first transect. At 4:48 UTC, the first CTD station is at 58.22N-2.26W. At 5:27 UTC we see the first echo recordings: small red schools just above the bottom. That must be herring, we think, and we shoot the net for haul 1. Fishing is tricky because it is a rocky seabed. The catch consists of a mixture of 160 kg whiting, haddock and grey gurnard. Oh, there is also one herring.

Normaal gesproken is er haring op het noordelijke transect. Dertig mijl naar het oosten, in dieper water (100m) zetten we op een soortgelijke echo uit, maar de vangst valt weer tegen: een halve mand sprot, jonge haring, makreel en wijting. - Normally, there is herring on the northern transect. Thirty miles to the east, in deeper water (100m), we shoot the net on similar recordings, but the catch is disappointing again: half a basket of sprat, young herring, mackerel and whiting.

Anderhalf uur later doen we weer een poging. Dit keer is er een continue laag waarneembaar, met af en toe een wat grotere dieprode school ertussen. Tijdens trek 3 slagen we erin om enkele van de scholen te raken. De verwachtingen zijn hoog. De hoeveelheid vangst valt een beetje tegen: ruim twee ton jonge haring ("toters" in vissersjargon) met veel kever er doorheen. - An hour and a half later we try again. This time a continuous layer can be observed, with an occasional larger deep red school in between. During haul 3 we manage to hit some of the schools. Expectations are high. The amount of catch is a bit disappointing: just over two tons of young herring with a lot of Norway pout mixed through it.
