Terug op de raai met veel haring/Back on track with plenty herring

Niet lang het verlaten van de haven van Aberdeen, stootten we op vele kleine schooltjes op het echo gram. De zeekoeten en alken op het wateroppervlak, doen vermoeden dat dit "klein spul" is, ofwel: sprot en jonge haring. Shortly after leaving the port of Aberdeen, we see a lot of small schools on the echogram. The guillemots and razorbills at the surface indicate that this may be "small stuff", or: sprat and young herring.

Het net wordt uitgezet (trek 9). Vissend vlak boven de grond zien we kleine plukjes op de trawlsonar: een indicatie dat er wat in het net zit. Omdat er op ongeveer 50m wat scholen zitten die wat sterker tekenen op de hogere frekwenties, besluiten we er de twee helft van de trek doorheen te vissen. Vroeger zouden we dat niet gedaan hebben, maar nu we een camera in het net hebben durven dat wel aan: we kunnen nu achteraf zien welke soorten in de vangst bij bepaalde visscholen op het echogram horen. We shoot the net for haul 9. While fishing close to the bottom we see small wisps on the trawl sonar: an indication that something has entered the net. Since there are schools at 50m that give a stronger response on the higher frequencies, we decided to fish through them during the second half of the haul. In the past we would not have done this, but now that we have a camera in the net we dare to give it a try: we can see now afterwards which species in the catch belong to certain schools on the echogram.

De vangst bestaat uit 200 kg, sprot met 6% jonge haring. In de mazen van het net en op het achterdek vinden we wat heel jonge zandspieringen (5-7 cm). Deze is zo klein dat, ze al gauw ergens doorheen vallen en er niets terug te vinden is in de vangst op de sorteerband. The catch consists of 200kg sprat, mixed with 6% herring. In the meshes of the net and on the rear dek we find some very small sandeel (5-7cm). These are so small, that it falls through any gap or whatever and we never found them in the catch on the sorting belt.

De camerabeelden tonen dat de scholen hoger in de waterkolom, inderdaad bestonden uit zandspiering. Je ziet ze in het net langs de camera schieten en door de grote mazen weer naar buiten gaan. The camera footage shows that de schools higher in the water column, indeed exist of sandeel. You can see them moving fast along the camera and excape through the larger meshes in the front net.

Tegen het einde van de survey dag (in de schemer), zetten we nog eens het net uit, dit keer voor enkele kleine paaltjes haring. Schipper Kinne Reichgeld picked er snel een schooltje uit en trek hem in het net. In the evening (dusk) we shoot the net again, this time for some small herring pillars. De vangst is 4 ton haring. Dat betekent nachtwerk voor Andre en Hendrik-Jan.The catch is 4 tonnes of herring, which means night work for Andre and Hendrik-Jan.

Gedurende het hele transect blijven we haringscholen zien. During the whole transect we keep seeing herring schools.

Haul 11, 13-7-2016, 57.21N-1.05E, 1200kg herring

In trek 12 aan het oostelijke uiteinde van het transect, zien we ook scholen hoger in de waterkolom, ongeveer 25m onder het oppervlak. At the eastern end of the transect we see schools higher in the water column, about 25m below the surface.

Tijdens het halen van het net in trek 12, duikt er nog een flinke school op. Doordat de snelheid van het schip laag is tijdens het halen, verschijnt de school niet als "paal", maar wordt hij meer uitgerekt. Eigenlijk geeft dit de juiste proporties beter weer, dan tijdens het normale varen. In de figuur zie je de ware proporties ten opzichte van het schip in 3D. During hauling of the net in haul 12, a large school pops up. As a result of the low vessel speed, the shape is less pillar-shaped and more elongated. In fact this shows the school proportions in a more realistic way. The figure below gives the true proportions of the school in comparison to the vessel.
