Een drukke ochtend en het inkorten van de voorlopers- A busy morning and shortening of the sweeps

Op donderdag 9 juli 2020, hervatten we de survey om 3:12 UTC op 56.22N-0.13W in oostelijke richting. Om 4:50 ziet Benoit kleine schooltjes op de bodem en besluit om te gaan vissen (trek 17). Bij het uitzetten van het net ziet schipper Kinne Reichgeld grote scholen op de sonar. We besluiten om eerst op die scholen te gaan vissen. De verwachtingen zijn hoog: zou dit dan toch eindelijk haring zijn? De vangst is een kleine drie ton schelvis (8% makreel). Direct daarna vissen we aan de grond op de kleine schooltjes. De vangst verschilt niet veel van de voorgaande trek. Er zit wat wijting bij dit keer... en 53 haringen. We concluderen dat de samenstelling van de echo's aan de grond niet wezenlijk verschilt van de de grote pelagische scholen.

On Thursday, July 9, 2020, we resume the survey at 3:12 UTC at 56.22N-0.13W in eastern direction. At 4:50 am Benoit sees small schools on the bottom and decides to go fishing (haul 17). During shooting of the net, skipper Kinne Reichgeld sees large schools on the sonar. We decide to fish for those schools first. The expectations are high: will this finally be herring? The catch is a small three tons of haddock (8% mackerel). Immediately afterwards we fish close at the seafloor at the small schools. The catch is not much different from the previous haul. The difference is that there's some whiting with it this time ... and 53 herrings. We conclude that the composition of the bottom echo's is not really different from the big pelagic schools.

Op het filmpje zie je hoe de kuil van het net met de vangst van trek 17 boven het geopende luik van de last wordt getild. Vervolgens wordt de kuil geopend en valt de vangst naar beneden in de last. In het filmpje hieronder zie je hoe de vangst in de last terecht komt (trek 18).

Hendrik-Jan en André registreren de gegevens van de 53 haringen die ook in de vangst zaten. Per cm lengteklasse worden van 5 exemplaren achtereenvolgens lengte, gewicht, geslacht en rijpheid geregistreerd. - Hendrik-Jan and André record the data of the 53 herrings that were also caught. Tenslotte wordt van elke haring de twee otolieten (gehoorssteentjes) verzameld voor het bepalen van de leeftijd, later in het laboratorium. - Finally, the two otoliths (auditory stones) of each herring are collected for age determination, later in the laboratory.

André heeft de otolieten van een haring uit de kop verwijderd en doet ze voorzichtig in het genummerde vakje van de verzamelplaat. - André has removed the otoliths of a herring from the head and carefully puts them in the numbered compartment of the collection plate.

We varen door naar het oosten. Om 13:05 UTC komen we op 56.22N-1.42E bij het einde van het transect en draaien naar het zuidwesten. Om 15:04 draaien we op 56.07N-1.13E naar het westen op het volgende transect. Om 16:43 UTC vissen we op hetzelfde soort scholen die we in de ochtend zagen. Het zal wel weer schelvis zijn. Nee dus. Hoewel er ook schelvis en wijting in zit, bestaat de vangst vooral uit makreel. Dat is vreemd, want we zagen geen makreel-scholen op het echogram - deze kun je herkennen doordat ze op de echogrammen van de hogere frequenties sterkere echo's geven dan op de lagere frequenties. Bovendien zijn we er van overtuigd dat we de makreel niet hoger in de waterkolom hebben opgepikt tijdens het halen, want we zagen de vis op de netsonde (sonar in de netopening) in het net zwemmen toen het net bij de bodem was. Mogelijk zit de makreel zo dicht tegen de grond, dat we het niet kunnen zien.

We continue to the east. At 13:05 UTC we arrive at 56.22N-1.42E at the end of the transect and turn southwest. At 15:04 we turn west on 56.07N-1.13E on the next transect. At 16:43 UTC we are fishing for the same kind of schools we saw in the morning. We assume that it will be haddock again. Well no. Although it also contains haddock and whiting, the catch mainly consists of mackerel. That is strange, because we did not see mackerel schools on the echogram - you can see this because this species gives stronger echoes on the echograms of the higher frequencies than on the lower frequencies. Also, we are convinced that we did not pick up the mackerel higher in the water column during hauling, as we saw the fish swimming in the net on the trawl sonar when it was still at the bottom. The mackerel may be so close to the ground that we cannot see it.
