Bij de Duivelse gaten - At the Devils Holes

Op woensdagochtend 8 juli om 2:58UTC starten we op een nieuwe transect vanaf 56.57.07N-1.04.36W in oostelijke richting. Om 8:57UTC zetten we het net uit op schooltjes boven de bodem. Het lukt niet om de schooltjes te pakken te krijgen, maar we zien we vis in het net gaan op het scherm van de trawl sonar: dit is vis die los zwemt (niet in scholen), vlak boven de bodem. Om te voorkomen dat de vangst te groot wordt, halen we het net. De vangst bestaat schelvis en makreel.

On Wednesday morning, July 8, at 02:58 UTC, we begin a new transect heading east from 56°57.07′N, 1°04.36′W. At 08:57 UTC, we deploy the net targeting small schools of fish located above the seabed. Although we fail to catch the schools themselves, the trawl sonar display shows fish entering the net—specifically, fish swimming individually (not in schools) just above the bottom. To prevent the catch from becoming too large, we haul the net. The catch consists of haddock and mackerel.

Gedurende de rest van de dag zien we weinig scholen. We varen het transect uit tot het einde op 56.57.50N-2.00.52O, draaien naar het zuiden en beginnen om 16:40UTC op 56.40.88N-1.59.86E aan een nieuw transect naar het westen. Als we op 56.40.93N-1.25.43O dan toch het net uitzetten op enkele schooltjes, gaat het brandalarm af. Het blijkt dat de hydroliekolie van de netsonde winch is oververhit. We moeten de trek afbreken en de schade opmaken. Eerst moet de olie afkoelen, waarna de filters en afdichtingen van de leidingen moeten worden vervangen. Daarna hopen we dat het weer werkt, zodat we weer kunnen vissen. De machinisten zijn hiermee het grootste deel van de nacht zoet mee. Ondertussen gaan we wel door met het verzamelen van akoestische data. Om 21:05UTC op 56.40.95N-0.51.34O stoppen we voor de nacht.

De volgende ochtend, donderdag 9 juli, blijkt dat we weer kunnen vissen. Vanaf 4:07UTC varen we verder over het transect naar het westen. Om 5:12UTC onderbreken we onze koers om te vissen op schooltjes boven de bodem (trek 14). De vangst bestaat uit een mix van schelvis, makreel en wijting.

We see few schools for the rest of the day. We complete the current transect, ending at 56.57.50N-2.00.52E, turn south, and begin a new westward transect at 16:40 UTC from 56.40.88N-1.59.86E. Just as we deploy the net on a few small schools at 56.40.93N-1.25.43E, the fire alarm goes off. It turns out the hydraulic oil in the net-sonde winch has overheated. We have to abort the haul and assess the damage. First, the oil needs to cool down, after which the filters and pipe seals must be replaced. We hope it will be operational again after that so we can resume fishing. The engineers spend most of the night working on this. Meanwhile, we continue collecting acoustic data. We stop for the night at 21:05 UTC at 56.40.95N-0.51.34E.

The next morning, Thursday, July 9, we find that we can fish again. From 04:07 UTC, we continue along the westward transect. At 05:12 UTC, we interrupt our course to fish on small schools located above the seabed (haul 14). The catch consists of a mix of haddock, mackerel, and whiting.

We varen verder naar het westen. Vrij snel na trek 14, om 7:26UTC, precies boven een van de Duivels gaten, zien we op de sonar dat zich in de eerste tien meter onder de oppervlakte kleine schooltjes vis bevinden. Deze zitten zo hoog, dat ze niet te zien zijn met het echolood. Zou dit haring zijn? Als dat zo zou zijn, betekent het dat we hiervan geen akoestische registraties kunnen maken. We zetten het net uit voor trek 15 voor een oppervlakte trek en zien op het scherm van de netsonde enkele schooltjes het net ingaan. Bij het halen blijkt dat de vangst uit makreel bestaat. Er zit geen enkele haring in de vangst.

We continue sailing westward. Shortly after haul 14, at 07:26 UTC, precisely above one of the Devils holes, the sonar reveals small schools of fish in the top ten meters of the water column. They are positioned so close to the surface that they do not register on the echosounder. Could this be herring? If so, it means we cannot obtain acoustic recordings of them. We deploy the net for a surface haul (haul 15) and observe a few small schools entering the net on the netsonar display. Upon retrieval, the catch turns out to consist of mackerel; there is not a single herring in the catch.

Na trek 15 varen we door naar het einde van het transect op 56.40.94N-0.46.66O. We komen hier aan om 13:19UTC, draaien naar het zuidoosten en starten op een nieuw transect op 56.24.63N-0.27.92W in oostelijke richting. We maken dit transect af zonder te vissen. Om 21:30 komen we aan bij het oostelijke einde van het transect op 56.24.38N-1.48.81O. Vanaf deze positie stomen we naar het noordwesten om de volgende dag te beginnen aan de eerste lijn van het zigzag-transect in de oostkant van het onderzoeksgebied.

We complete this transect without fishing. At 21:30, we arrive at the eastern end of the transect at 56.24.38N-1.48.81E. From this position, we steam northwest to begin the first line of the zigzag transect in the eastern part of the survey area the following day.
