After a stay in Leith, we leave on Monday morning 16 July 2018 at 4:00 UTC. While sailing through the Firth of Forth we pass Bass Rock. This is a rocky island with a large bird seabird colony. It inhabits 140.000 pairs of Gannets (Morus bassanus) which is 10% of the worldwide population! The scientific name of this species is derived from from this rock. During the survey we see a lot of Gannets. They are attracted by the vessel when we fish, but we see them also frequently during sailing of transects. They fly in groups to and from Bass Rock.

At 8:49 UTC 55.47N-1.39W we start on the next transect in eastern direction. We do not see much fish today. In the evening at 18:00 UTC we decide to give it a try and shoot the net for a few little schools at the bottom (haul 18). Unfortunately the density of schools is too low to find them back and again we do not hit one: haddock and whiting.
Trek 18, 16 juli 2018, 55.44N-0.43.72O, 47 kg schelvis (50%) en wijting(50%). - Haul 18, 16 Juli 2018, 55.44N-0.43.72E, 47kg haddock(50%) and whiting (50%). |
The next morning UTC, tuesday 17 July 2018 at 5:30 UTC, in a nice and calm sea, we see large herring pillars on the echogram. Of course we shoot the net for those (haul 19, 55.16N-0.40E).

During the haul the bottomrope of the net must have touched the bottom. This is apparent from the bottom stuff which drop from the meshes during hauling. Old (already dead) clams of the species Quahog (Arctica islandica) are scattered on the deck. This species can reach an age of several hundreds of years. On most of the quahogs grows dead man's finger (Alcyonium digitatum), a soft coral species.
- The soft coral species dead man's finger (Alcyonium digitatum) on a shell of a red whelk (Neptunea antiqua), quahogs (Arctica islandica) and a damaged Norway king crab (Lithodes maja).
After haul 19 we take a sample of the dense plankton layer above the bottom with the WP2 net.
At 12:00 UTC we carry out haul 20 on small schools that we do not see back on the trawl sonar. The catch is half a basket of haddock and whiting. We proceed to the western end of the transect.
Trek 20, 17 juli 2018, 55.17N-0.12W, 22kg schelvis(60%) en wijting(30%). - Haul 20, 17 July 2018, 55.17N-0.12W, 22kg haddock and whiting(30%). |
- Catch of haul 20 (from left below clockwise): whiting, grey gurnard and haddock. |
