Een transect zonder haring/ A transect without herring

We zijn nu (10 juli 16:00 UTC op het noord-zuid stuk tussen het 57.16N en het 57.01N transect op 2.0E. Er was geen haring op het 57.16N transect. We hebben gevist op de enige schooltjes die hebben gezien. De vangst bestond uit een mand kwallen, jone en volwassen kever en jonge schelvis. Waarschijnlijk zijn deze kleine visjes door de grote mazen geglipt, vandaar de kleine vangst.
We are now (10 July 16:00 UTC) at the north-south track between the 57.16N transect and the 57.01N transect at 2.0E . There was no herring on the 57.16N transect. We fished on the only schools we saw on the echogram. The catch was a basket of jellyfish, young and adult Norway pout and young haddock. Presumably these small fish escaped through the large meshes in the front net, hence the small catch.

In het weekend hebben we in de haven Aberdeen gelegen. Enkele bemanningsleden en wetenschappers werden afgelost. Bemanningslid Arie Krijgsman vierde zijn 60ste verjaardag. 'Sochtends taart en 'savonds een barbecue.
During the weekend we stayed in the port of Aberdeen. Some crew members and scientists took over for the next half of the survey. Crew member Arie Krijgsman celebrated his 60th birthday. Cake in the morning and a barbecue in the evening.

Op zondag 9 juli om 18:00 UTC verlaat de Tridens de haven van Aberdeen om weer verder te gaan met de haring survey/ On sunday 9 July at 18:00 UTC Tridens departs from the port of Aberdeen to continue the herring survey.

In de avond van zondag 9 juli verlaat de Tridens de haven en gaat verder met de survey om 19:20 UTC op 57.17N-1.45W in oostelijke richting. In the evening of Sunday 9 July Tridens leaves the port and resumes the survey at 19:20 at 57.17N-1.45W in eastern direction.

Benoit Berges en Dick de Haan zijn in het weekend naar huis gevlogen. Ze zijn vervangen door Dirk Burggraaf en nieuwe collega bij Wageningen Marine Research Serdar Sakinan. Verder is aan boord als gast Martin Pastoors van de Pelagic Freezertrawler Association (PFA).
Benoit Berges en Dick de Haan flew back home in the weekend. They have been replaced by Dirk Burggraaf and our new colleague at Wageningen Marine Research Serdar Sakinan. On board as a guest is Martin Pastoors from the Pelagic Freezertrawler Association (PFA).

De eerste maatjes en een kleine Burgemeester/The first maatjes herring and a Iceland gull

Vanochtend (7 juli) zijn we aan het einde van het vierde transect (57.31N-1.43W) aangekomen. Voor op de boeg zat een behoorlijk wtte meeuw, een kleine burgemeester. Deze soort broedt op Groenland en het Noord-Amerikaanse Arctische gebied en wordt niet zo vaak waargenomen in dit gebied. Aan het kleed te zien is dit een onvolwassen exemplaar van twee broedseizoenen geleden.
This morning we arrived at the western end of the fourth transect (57.31N-1.43W). At the bow we spot a rather white gull, an Iceland gull. This species breeds on Greenland and the American Arctic and is rarely seen in this area. The plumage of this specimen indicated that this is a subadult of two years old.

Van dichtbij:  de kleine burgemeester heeft een kleinere snavel en kortere nek dan een grote burgemeester (Larus hyperboreus)/ Close up: smaller bill and shorter neck than glaucous gull (Larus hyperboreus).

Op de 57.31N raai troffen we minder haring aan dan op de noordelijker transecten. Maar in de drie trekken die we hebben gedaan, zat meer dan genoeg haring voor de bemonstering.

At the 57.31N transect we saw less herring than in the more northern transects. However, the three hauls we carried out, contained more than enough herring for sampling.

Net voor het einde van het transect vissen we nog op wat lichte aantekeingen op de bodem. Het laatste kwartier trekken we het net zo'n 30m onder de oppervlakte, waar we rode schooltjes zien op het echogram. De vangst bestaat uit wijting (van de bodem) en wat sprotjes (van het oppervlak).
Shortly before the end of the transect we fish for some light echo's at the bottom. The last fifteen minutes of the haul we tow the trawl at approximately 30m below the surface where we saw some red schools on the echogram. The catch consists of whiting (from the bottom) and some sprat (from the surface).

De eerste zellfbereidde maatjes van het seizoen zijn klaar om geproeft te worden. Hier geniet Arie jan van een bijzonder goed exemplaar. /The first homemade maatjes-herring of this season are ready for tasting. Here Arie Jan is relishing a particular good specimen!

Wijting, kwallen en veel haring/Whiting, jellyfish and a lot of herring

De survey wordt voortgezet onder prachtige weersomstandigheden. Op 5 juli varen we op het 57.46N transect in oostelijke richting en doen twee trekken. In de ochtend doen we een trek op kleine schooltjes aan het oppervlak. De vangst bestaat uit een mandje wijting en wat kwallen. Zouden die schooltjes echt uit wijting bestaan? Wijting is een soort die normaal gesproken boven de bodem leeft. In de magen vanb de wijtingen treffen we heel jonge kabeljauwachtige visjes aan: misschien bestaan die schooltjes uit deze jonge visjes en zien we ze niet in de vangst omdat ze door de mazen zijn geslipt? We weten het niet zeker. In elk geval is er geen enkele aanwijzing dat de schooltjes uit haring of sprot bestaan.

The survey is continued in very good weather conditions. On 5 July we sail the 57.46N transect in eastern direction and carry out two hauls. In the morning we fish for schools at the surface. The catch is a basket of whiting and jellyfish. Does this mean that the schools consist of whiting? Whiting normally lives close to the bottom. In the stomachs we find young gadoids: may be the schools consist of these small fishes which we do not see in the catch because they slipped through the meshes? We are not sure about this. However, there is no indication that these schools consist of herring or sprat.

In de middag vissen we op klassieke haring-scholen: "palen" (Trek 7 14:30 57.46N-0.39W). Voor het onderzoek hebben we maar een paar honderd vissen nodig, maar met zoveel dichte, grote scholen is het moeilijk om te voorkomen dat het net volzit. De vangst is ongeveer 15 ton haring.
In the afternoon we fish for classic herring schools: herring "pillars" (Haul 7 14:30 57.46N-0.39W). For our research we only need a few hundred fishes, but with so many dense, large schools it is hard avoiding a full net. The catch is approximately 15 ton of herring.

Op dinsdag 4 juli hebben we het grootste deel van 58.01N raai gevaren. De wind draaide gisteren van WNW naar het oosten en - belangrijker! - nam sterk in kracht af. Terwijl we aan het varen waren over een steeds gladdere, zagen we wederom veel haring.
On tuesday 4 juli we sailed most of the 58.01N transect. The wind turned from WNW to the oost and - more important! - decreased significantly. While sailing on a sea that became increasingly flat, we encountered again a lot of herring.

Nadat Marcel en hendrik een monster hebben verzameld, gaat de bemanning haring kaken/ After Marcel and Hendrik have taken a sample, the crew collects fat herring for the preparation of "Maatjes". Each herring is "gilled" (removal of gills, gut and stomach)

De afgelopen week hebben collega's Dirk Burggraaf, Dick de Haan en Benoit Berges de akoestische apparatuur gecalibreerd in Scapa Flow (Orkney). Op zondagavond 2 juli om 18:00 UTC hebben we de haven van Aberdeen verlaten. Gisteren (maandag 3 juli) zijn we om 4:00 UTC begonnen op het meest noordelijke transect, op 58.16N-2.28E. Vanochtend rond 6:00 zijn we op 2 oost afgebogen naar het zuiden. Om 9:35, 4 juli, bevinden we on op 58.01N-1.12E, varende in westelijke richting.
Op het 58.16N transect hebben we drie keer gevist. Voor de eerste vistrek hebben we uitgezet voor waren lichte aantekeningen vlak boven de bodem. De vangst bestond uit nog geen halve mand van verschillende kabeljauwachtigen en een paar verdwaalde haringen en sprotjes.
Last week our colleagues Dirk Burggraaf, Dick de Haan and Benoit Berges have calibrated the acoustic equipment in Scapa Flow (Orkney). Sunday evening 2 July at 18:00 UTC we left the port of Aberdeen. Yesterday (Monday 3 July) we started at 4:00 UTC on the northernmost transect at 58.16N-2.28E. This morning at about 6:00 UTC we turned south towards the next transect. Now (9:35, 4 July) we are at 58.01N-1.12E heading west.
On the 58.16N transect we have carried out three hauls. For the first haul (3 July 58.16N-0.45W, 10:16 UTC), we shot the net for some light recordings at the bottom. The catch consisted of not even half a basket of gadoids with a few lonely sprats and herrings.

Voor de tweede trek (3 juli 58.16N-0.35W, 13:15 UTC) hebben we uitgezet op kleine rode schooltjes op 10-20m onder het oppervlak. We hadden moeite om het zware net zo dicht onder het oppervlak te trekken. Bovendien zagen we weinig terug van de kleine schooltjes waar het ons om te doen was. Toen we plotseling twee flinke "palen" op de bodem zagen, hebben we het net daarom snel laten zakken. De vangst: 1500 kg haring. Deze twee scholen waren een voorbode van vele scholen op het echogram gedurende de rest van de dag.
For the second haul (3 July 58.16N-0.35W, 13:15 UTC) we shot the net small schools at 10-20m under the surface. We had difficulties tow tow the net so high in water column. In addition we we did not see much of the echo's we had in mind when we started fishing. Therefore, when we saw two large "pillars"at the bottom, we dropped the net towards the bottom. The catch: 1500kg herring. The two schools turned out to be the first of many to come during the rest of that day.

Trek 2 - 3 juli 13:15 UTC 58.16N-0.35W. Het net wordt uitgezet voor scholen aan de oppervlakte. Haul 2 - 3 July 13:15 UTC 58.16N-0.35W: The net is being shot for schools at the surface.

Trek 2: als we de oppervlakte scholen niet zien en op het echogram twee palen op de bodem verschijnen, besluiten om daarop te gaan vissen: 1500kg haring/ Haul 2: when we do not see the surface school during fishing and two pillars appear at the bottom, we decide to fish for those.

Marcel sorteert haringen op lengte voor het bepalen van gewicht, rijpheid en het verzamelen van de otolieten (gehoorsteentjes) voor leeftijdsbepaling/ Marcel is sorting herring by lentgh class before recording weight, maturity and taking the otolith for age determination.

De derde trek vond 'savonds plaats (3 juli 58.16N-0.10E, 17:15 UTC) op deze scholen. De vangst bestond uit 4.5 ton vrij grote haring.
The third haul took place in the evening (3 July 58.16N-0.10E, 17:15 UTC), targeting these schools. The catch consisted of 4.5 tons of fairly large herring.

Afscheid - Good Bye

We zijn aan het einde van het laatste transect aangekomen. Dat wel zeggen: tot een paar mijl van het eigenlijke eindpunt, want een paar mijl van te voren blijft ons echolood programma hangen. Omdat we er toch bijna zijn, blijft Bram er vrolijk onder (foto). We zijn nu onderweg naar Scheveningen, doen nog wat administratie en back up - en schoonmaak-klusjes.
We have arrived at the end of the last transect. Or actually: we had to stop a few miles earlier, because the echo sounder software crashed. Since we are so close and have managed to cover all the previous transect so well, Bram is still smiling (see picture). We are now on our way to Scheveningen, doing some administration -, backup - and cleanup activities.

Het schooltje makreel dat in de drop keel schacht zwemt, is er nog steeds (zie eerste editie van deze blog). De makreeltjes zitten niet echt gevangen, want er is op sommige plekken tussen schacht en kiel meer dan voldoende ruimte om te ontsnappen. Het schooltje is overigens wel wat kleiner geworden: eerst waren het er ongeveer 30. Nu zijn er nog zo'n 15 over. Misschien zijn er toch een paar ontsnapt? Of misschien zijn er een aantal dood gegaan. We weten het niet.
The little school in the shaft of the drop keel, is still there (see first post of this blog). The mackerel are not really prisoned, because at some place between shaft and keel there is more than enough space for them to escape. The size of the school seems to have decreased: at first we estimated 30 individuals; now there are about 15 left. May be some have escaped after all? Or have they died? We do not know.

We willen de bezoekers van deze blog van harte bedanken voor de aandacht. Het was een geslaagde survey waarin we essentiele informatie hebben verzameld voor de bestandsschatting van haring en sprot in de Noordzee. Daarnaast hebben we ook weer nieuwe inzichten gekregen over het gedrag van de vis en hebben een paar veel belovende technische vernieuwingen in onze survey geïntroduceerd. Hopelijk hebben we ons eigen enthousiasme kunnen overbrengen in deze blog. Tot volgend jaar!
